Book Review: A Bad Day for Sunshine (Sunshine Vicram #1) by Darynda Jones

Hi Cara,

I loved Darynfa Jones Charley Davidson series, as that has ended I was looking forward to seeing what she would come up with next. What she came up with A Bad Day for Sunshine, the first book in the Sunshine Vicram Series.

Synopsis

Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the centre of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.

Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, its strong cups of coffee—and a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff–an election her adorably meddlesome parents entered her in–and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of it’s reminding Sunny why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that trouble at her daughter’s new school and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and Sunshine has her hands full.

Enter sexy almost-old-flame Levi Ravinder and a hunky US Marshall, both elevens on a scale of one to blazing inferno, and the normally savvy sheriff is quickly in over her head. Now it’s up to Sunshine to juggle a few good hunky men, a not-so-nice kidnapping miscreant, and Doug the ever-pesky flasher. And they said coming home would be drama-free.

A Bad Day for Sunshine is full of humour and mystery that kept me laughing and hooked.

Darynda Jones has created another strong funny leading female in Sunshine Vicram. She is smart and even going through a trauma and having a child young she accomplished a lot.

One of my favourite aspects of Sunshine is her relationship with her daughter Auri. They have a great relationship and there is a moment of truth between the two made me cry. I also like the fact that we read Auri POV, and her teenage slothing as well as dealing with a new school.

There one main case and a couple of side cases. The main case of a missing girl was interesting especially as she dreamt it happening for over 8 years. The side cases of missing convict and roaster were good additions to show how crazy the town is.

Darynda always has great lines in her book, below are my favourite;

“Levi walked towards the store to pay, and sun realized just how lucky his jeans to be able to hung such a perfect ass.”

“How did K-9 cops do it? How could they keep a professional relationship with their fellow officers when all she wanted to do was roll around the ground and cuddle with them?’

“Just ask yourself WWLSD?’

My Favourite aspects of A Bad Day for Sunshine;

  • Humour
  • All the characters are interesting
  • Interesting case
  • The town is weird and a character in itself
  • Easy to read
  • Fast-paced

My Rating for A Bad Day for Sunshine is 5 out of 5.
