Hi Kanca,

War is looming, a War against not just the Empire but every nation. A War larger than any nation has ever fought against.

Helene the Blood Strike to Emperor Marcus is being attack at all side, she is trying to keep her people safe but most important she is trying to keep her sister alive the Empresses.  Helene job is made ever harder as Marcus erratic behaviour becomes known and the Commandant uses this to her advantage to gain more power.

Laia of Serra is on the hunt to find away to stop the Nightbringer from bring back the Jinn. As she spreads the word of the danger the Nightbringer, she finds the people that she is asking help for are more dangerous to her at the time than the Nightbringer. In the end Laia is end up in a battle she thought she would have to fights, especially the person she ends up fighting side by side with.

Elias is still in the waiting place, accepting his role of the soul catcher, but to truly become the Soul catcher he must give himself completed over to the magic. Elias must do what he can to keep the balance between the world of the living and the dead, even if this costs him greatly.

Sabaa uses the character name as the chapter header to let you know which character POV its going to be. It’s very clever as in A Reaper at the Gate the header are sometimes the other name the character is known as, it gives you another insight to the character.

A Reaper at the Gate is full of action, drama and surprising revels (seriously surprising) that kept me hooked. I did feel that this book is Helene and Laia story,  Helene as she is in the forefront of the action, I was really enjoyed the battle of wits between Helene and the Commandant. The Commandant is still very much on my hate list, although I am interested to see what she has planned. Laia as she is on her journey to find a way to end the Nightbringer, I loved the prophecy and trying to figure it out with Laia.

Elias story is interesting in it own right, I am hoping that he plays a bigger part in the next book.

We are introduced to a new characters in the book, one that I would like to know more about and that is Musa. Musa is an ally that Laia find, well he find her, from the little bit of information we get, I get the feeling that he has a lot of interesting stories to tell.

I give this book 4.8 out of 5
