Areh By Jeffrey Kinsey

I was asked to read Areh by Jeffrey Kinsey for a fair and honest review.

First thing I need to comment is the art work, even reading the book on my ereader the art work was stunning. I bet the art work is more stunning seeing it physical in the book. I think the book and the art work would be great as an adult colouring book.

Areh is set in a world where an ancient religion ‘The Purpose’ has been cruelly altered in where children born with deformities are made to dress up and become the Gods and Goddess that they worship. They are mocked by the peers and worshiped by adults when they are just trying to find their own identity.

The book is mainly from Remi view the beginning of the half of the book Remi shows us the world from present day and flashbacks. The second half of the book Remi is on an epic religious journey to stop ‘The Purpose’ version of the apocalypse.

Remi is a poet and the writing style is some what poetic as well, the author has crafted a story that flows like a memory. That different things set Remi memory off allowing us more of the story to hand.

This book gives a new meaning for being burden with grief and questioning your religion.

If you like stories that brings you on a journey where the character world is turned upside down and has you and the character questioning reality, then you should read this stories. One of the reasons I enjoyed this book was the fact that they way this story started gave no clues on how it would end.

Killer Takes All Erica Spindler

Killer takes all is book 2 in the Stacey Killian series and book 3 in the Malone series.

The book starts off in New Orleans Stacey has resigned from Dallas P.D and is taking her masters degree in English lit at New Orleans college. But Stacey can’t hide from death any longer, her neighbor and friend is killed with Stacey finding the body, bring Stacey back into the world she wanted to escape from. Stacey starts to investigate the crime which brings her into the world of role play games which has turned deadly. As Stacey investigates the crime she buts heads with the detective on the case Spencer Malone, Spencer has come back to NOPD after being suspended for a crime he didn’t commit. He has been given his dream job but now Spencer has to deal with the cop that don’t believe his innocence and the ones waiting for him to fail.

I enjoyed the fact with books like this that we are welcome back into this world. Where we get to spend more time with a characters but also introduces to more characters expanding the world. I also like the fact we get to hear little bits about the characters that have got there happy endings, like hearing about Stacey sister Jane and baby Annie.

With this story I spent time thinking I knew who was the killer than for something else to happen which changed by suspect. Erica does like to keep you guessing till the very end. I will admit that my first guess was correct although my guess for motive wasn’t.

Also the story had connection to Alice in wonderland with the killer calling him The White Rabbit, which after reading Heartless made it easier to understand the reference as that story still in my mind.

I can’t wait to see what happens next with Stacey and Spencer as I really enjoyed there dynamic and banter. Next book In the series is Last Know Victim which I need to find and add it to my tbr list.

I give the book 4 out of 5.

See Jane Die By Erica Spindler

See Jane Dieis the second book in the Malones series and the first in the Stacy Killian .See Jane Die follows Stacy sister Jane, When Jane was a teenage she was in a horrible accident that left her face disfigured and caused her to lose her eye. After years are surgery Jane life is perfect, she has a husband and a carer that she loves. But it seems that her happiness isn’t going to last forever. When her husband is charged for murder and she starts receiving messages that make it look like her accident wasnt an accident.Stacy Killian Jane sister is a Homicide Cop, when the suspect in her case is her sister Jane Husband Stacy loyalty is tested to the police and to her sister.

I really enjoyed the story, Erica Spindler writing keeps you griped from the beginning. As you read though the story you are in Jane and Stacy position, trying to figure out who are committing these crime and how this is connected to Jane. I will say this I figure one thing out before it revealed but I would have never guess the last twist, it took me that much by surprise.

One of the reason I like Erica Spindler book is the character, they are real and have physical and mental scars that they are dealing with. The characters are more relatable because of this, like with Jane due to her physical scars she find it hard to believe the good in her life. It’s so relatiable as people like myself question it when you don’t match society image of health and beauty.

If people who like Karen Rose that you will like these book, and if you already ready Erica Spindler give Karen Roses book a read.

The Final Murder (Vik & Stubo #2) By Anne Holt

I picked up The Final Murderby Anne Holt due to the description on the back of the book. The story revolves around the murder of “Celebrities” in different and gruesome manner. The problem that Superintendent Adam Stubo faces is a case with no connection between the victims and no evidence. The only thing that he has is a pattern that his wife Johanne Vik sees, and if this theory is correct this could mean Adam and Johanne life in danger.

I found enjoyed the twist in the story and how it slowly piece together. The book is multilayeredwith the focus changing from the case, to Adam and Johanne. Also part of the book focusing different characters. It helped give a more real feel as she can see how the case impacts on other people, and what the police end up finding out when they are looking for a killer.

My only problem that I had was the writing style, the writing had a different rhythmto what I am use to and what my brain could easily process. Also I has an issue with the names, I couldn’t tell by the name the gender which cause me the confusion on the characters so I had to keep going back to reminding myself.

I really enjoyed the characters of Adam and Johanne and would like to see what happens to them next, but it wouldn’t be a book series that I am in a rush to read.

I give this book 3 out of 5.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

I was really intrigued by the premise of this book, the story of how the Queen of Hearts became the Heartless Queen of Hearts. Heartlessin essence is a love story, a girl with a dream to open a bakery and to marry of love and not for obligation.

I fell in love with the book from the first chapters, Cath is created in such a way that I was drawn in and fell in love with her from the beginning. Part of this maybe that if I was in that world than I would want to be like Cath, I would want bake, run a bakery and marry for love. I wouldn’t want to be play the game of the gentry and the fake polite society.

This book made me feel like I was going through an emotional rollercoaster, Cath relationship with her Parents, Mary-Ann and Jest pulled at every emotion. There were times that I would have to put the book to calm myself down before I could continue. I would love to read more about Jest as the more I read the more I loved, I believe everyone needs a Joker in their lives.

I feel now that when I read or watch Alice in Wonderland I can will always see the Queen of Heart as Cath and the woman she could have been if her dreams could have come true.

I give this book 5 out of 5.

For me this book has been the surprise book of the year so far I knew I will like it but would never by how much.

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza

I received Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza from the February FairyLoot box. The box was amazing I am now signed up on the monthly subscription. The subscription boxes have opened my eyes to so many new book that I would have missed out before, even with my eyes opens to a different selections of books I would have over looked this book. This book is more science fiction than fantasy which I hadn’t read much of before, but I will now be looking out for them too, to the detriment of my bank balance.

Empress of a Thousand Skies follows Rhee the Crown princess of Ta’an the last in her bloodline who will take her place on the Thorne on her 16th birthday. Rhee lives in a world where peace is a delicate situation, peace has been reach after many years of war between planets. But Rhee comes to realise that not everyone want peace and what they will do to start a new war.

I am always jealous of writer that can create these amazing and detailed world that are nothing like what we have or every read before. The world and the people of Empress of a Thousand Skiesare so different and interesting that you could easilyhave books about the different planets, its people and it histories and that would be fascinating in its self.

I always enjoy when the writer has chapters that follow different characters, Rhoda does that with Rhee and Alyosha they have very different lives but their stories are intertwined. It also helped me get a better understand of the world and what there is to lose if they don’t succeedin their personal missions. Another reason I like this is that it keeps the pace of the book up, so something is always happening that moves the story on.

I will be looking out for the next book in the series, as I want to see what happens next but also so I can get to know the character and the worlds better.

I give this book 4 out of 5.

Ink by Alice Broadway

They say never judge a book by its cover, but you can with this book amazing cover and amazing book.

The book is set in a world where your life is tattooed on your skin. Your first tattoo is your name several days after you are born, this continues with age, qualification, job, marriage, children etc. This is done so that when you die your skin is created into a book that allows your life to be judged as good or bad. If you are good your life and name with live on, if you are bad than you are forgotten.

Ink follows Leora Flint her father has just died and Leora and her mother are waiting for his soul to be weighed to determineif he was good or bad man. During this time Leora is leaving the safety of school and into a world that isn’t as black and white as it seems.

The book is focused on Leora I found her a very interesting character, you can see the change in her through out the book and the struggles that she is going through. I didn’t always agree with how she goes about things but I can sort of understand why.

There was two other aspects of the book that I found really interesting the fact that the Inked fear the blanks (people with no tattoo). Which is really interesting considering that most people in current society fear or judge people more if they have lots of tattoos. The second aspect I found interesting was the stories, the history of the people intertwined with fairy tale stories that I already known.

I look forward to see what happens next with Leora and how this affects the people of Saintstone and beyond.
