Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Geekerella by Ashley Poston caught my eye when I was a YALC, it was the perfect book to pick up while at a Convention.

Geekerella follows Elle as she tries to get money and a costume together to enter the Starfield Cosplay competition at ExcelsiCon. But this isn’t as easy as it seems when Elle has to deal with a wicked stepmother how is all about appearances, and two stepsister that take pleasure in making Elle life hell. To top it off they are making her favorite TV show Starfield into a film with an actor that Ella doesn’t think is fit to play Federation Prince Carmindor.

The other person Geekerella follows is Darien Freeman, the actor that is playing Federation Prince Carmindor. Darien is a closet Geek who loves the show Starfield, but his manager doesn’t want people knowing that side of him. He is having to deal with the pressure of playing his favorite character, and the backlash of him playing Carmindor.

One wrong number Darien and Elle find that they are not so alone in the universe.

I like the fact that each chapter swapped from Elle and Darien, its nice to see their reaction to each other messages.

This book is a love letter to the world of fandom, I couldn’t help but smile to myself when the fandoms I loved were mentioned. There is a couple of section in the book which show the amazing camaraderie between ‘Geeks’, and how they stick up for one of their own, it doesn’t even have to be the same Fandom.

Ashley Poston has created some amazing characters, that you love and hate for example;

Elle best friend Sage is funny, loyal, sarcastic and talented who is comfortable in how she is. She is a friend everyone should have

Chloe one of Elle stepsister I spent a lot of the book wanting to punch her in the face.

I part listen to this book and part read it, piece of advice there were parts that made me want to cry. Which while listening to the book when walking home from work is not the best timing.

This book is full of romance, laughs, heart-break and fun a true emotional rollercoaster. I just now need to find my geeky prince.

I think this type of book is great for someone who has difficulty with reading as the text messages helps break up the text. Some of the first book I started reading had lots of text and email messages in them and it help build up my confidence to try other books.

I give this book 4.7 out of 5.
