And I Darken (The Conqueror’s Saga #1) by Kiersten White

I have previously read Kiersten White Paranormalcy series and enjoyed her writing style, so I thought I would start reading her The Conqueror’s Saga. The first book in the series is And I Darken.

And I Darken is set a real period of time in around the 1430 in Wallachia, (now part of Romania) Lada and Radu are the son and daughter of Vlad 2nd, to keep his throne Vlad has sent his son and daughter to be held hostage by the Ottomen empire.  Lada is not beautiful but she is strong and fierce everything women at this time shouldn’t be. Radu is beautiful, emotional and caring, everything a man should not be. Their life has not been easy and becomes more difficult when they are sent away. They only start to feel like they fit in when they make friends with Mehmed,Mehmed is the third and least favourite of the Ottomen Sultan son. The story follows these three as they grow up and have to come to terms with, love, responsiblity, betrayal, and being true to ones self.

The story was interesting I never know what to expect from one chapter to another, I enjoyed the fact that we got to see the story from both Lada and Radu perspective as they have different outlook on their situation.

I had recently watched a documentary about Vlad the Impaler and found it interesting as I read the book seeing how the author Kiersten White had marriage fact and fiction seamlessly. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes stories that mix fact and fiction together.

I can’t wait to see what Kiersten White has in store next for Lada, Radu and Mehmed and what facts she will work into her fiction.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5.
