Hi Przyjaciel,

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik is a retelling of the Fairytale Rumpelstiltskin, I have to be honest my knowledge of Rumpelstiktskin is mainly from the T.V show Once Upon a time.

Miryen is fed up of being poor, her grandfather is a successful moneylender but her Father is a very bad one. He has been lending money but never getting the people, to pay it back, leading the family into poverty. Miryen has had enough and decides to collect the money herself. Hardening her heart to the difficult of the people who didn’t care when she had nothing. Miryem realised that she is very good at it, so much so that she gains a reputation of being able to turn silver into gold. But when her reputation is heard by the “people who hunt in the woods that bring death, destruction in their wake to gain gold. Miryen is now on a path that will change the Kingdom forever.

This story is truly magically with the mixture of Fairytale and Folklore, it’s also a great reminder of the power of words.

Spinning Sliver has a great mixture of female characters, who are all very different but are all trying to do their best in difficult situations. I would say there are three female leads in this book, Miryem, Wanda and Irina, the book is weaver beautiful that connects all three and who they change the kingdom. I think my favourite out of the three is Miryem she is smart, hard working and doing the best for her family. I like the fact that her Grandfather respect her more when she proves herself.

The book does swap from different perspective, I enjoyed seeing the story from the different sides, the only problem I had was that it took me a little bit to realise which perspective I was reading.

This book is really loosely based on Rumplestilskin which I liked seeing certain elements of the originally fairytale, but with Naomi spin as it was kept guessing and gripped though all 466 pages.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5
