Book Review: Damsel by Elana K. Arnold

Hi Draugs,

Damsel by Elana. K Arnold was one of the books I managed to get my hand on at YALC.

To be King Prince Emory must slay a dragon and rescue a Damsel as tradition dictates. The Damsel will come back with the Prince to be his queen.

The Damsel Ama has no memory of her time before the Prince rescued her. Prince Emory has even given her the name Ama.

As Emory and Ama  journey to Emory home land, Ama comes to realise that she may have been safer with the dragon than in the Princes Court.

Damsel is a fairytale for people who want a fairytale with a feminist twist.

As Damsel progress my opinion changes of Emory, he may at first look like the ideal Prince Charming but looks can be very deceptive. It’s not surprising that he is they he is with the attitudes in Harding.

Ama is an interesting character who she is trying to find herself.  While everyone else is trying to tell her how she should act. That she has a certain role to play, but it does not feel natural for Ama.

Also the authors Elana writing style is beautiful and easy to read, I finished the book in one night as it was so easy to read.

Most importantly I loved the ending of Damsel, it was very much a fist pump in the air moment.

Please beware that this book does contain element that maybe trigger for some people. The book does deal with Rape, sexual assault, mental and physical abuse, animal abuse, suicide. If these elements won’t trigger you and you like a fairytale with a dark twist that I would advise picking up Damsel.

My Rating for Damsel is 4 out of 5.

Did you enjoyed this post, if so Id love it if you help by spreading it by emailing it to a friend, or sharing it on any social media platform.
