Book Review: The Mortal Word (|The Invisible Library #5) by Genevieve Cogman

Hello Mon Amie,

The Mortal Word by Genevieve Cogman, is the 5th book in the Invisible Library series. The Mortal Word is the first book in the series that I have read. It not a requirement to read the previous 4 book to understand the storyline. If you are like me you will want to go back and read them.

In Irene existence there are hundreds of different worlds.

In all of the worlds mortals live, but they are influences/ controlled by either Dragons, creatures of control, or Fae, creatures of Chaos. Dragons and Fae hate each other (That is an understatement). After many wars the Dragons and Fae have decided to hold peace talks in hope of signing a treaty.

Due to a key diplomat being killed the situation become very tricky. As a Librarian Spy and friend to a mortal detective Vale, they have been asked to investigate and find the killer, in an alternative 1890’s Paris. When the accusation start to fly from either side, Irene will have to find the truth in all the lies.

The Mortal Word is a perfect mix of fantasy and mystery that kept me captivated.

The concept of the multiple worlds is fascinating, I love that fact that when deciding the location for the peace talks, it wasn’t just a location of a country but which version of earth. Vale the detective is use to his universe Paris, so it was fun to see the slight differences from his view.

Notably Irene is an amazing leading lady, she smart, brave, funny and is willing to do what is right. The different side of Irene you will see depend on who she is dealing with. She understands the different hierarchy and how to deal with them without dying, control or fired. From the beginning a liked Irene, I really connected with Irene when she kept getting pulled out of a meal to deal with situations, and her internal monologue about her hunger.

I would like to hang out with Irene, Vale and Kai, it might not be great for my health but it would be entertaining.

The story kept my guessing in who was behind the murder and why. There was so many great twist and turns that will keep you on your toes. The Mortal word has two amazing sections in the book full of magically action that will blown you away.

My Rating for The Mortal Word is 5 out of 5.
