Book Review: Heroes: Mortals and Monsters, Quests and Adventures (Stephen Fry’s Great Mythology #2) by Stephen Fry

Hi Agapitoí fíloi kai fíles,

After finishing Mythos, I started listening to the second book in the series Heroes.

Heroes as the title suggests this book forces on the Heroes of Greek Myths and legends.

Stephen tells the stories;.

  • Perseus and the Medusa.
  • Heracles his life and his 12 labours.
  • Bellerophon life  and Pegasus.
  • Orpheus and his golden lyre.
  • Jason and his Argonauts
  • Atalanta huntress and queen
  • Oedipus and his parents
  • Theseus, Athens and the minotaur

I knew some of the stories as I studied some of the Greek plays that Stephen refers too, but I learnt more about them from Stephen storytelling.

One of my favourite stories to find out about is Atalanta, the girl abandoned by her parents, raised by bear to become an amazing huntress. That bested and man.

One of my other favourite elements is the prophecies, if most of them didn’t listen to the prophecies a lot of this entertaining trouble would have not happened. Also the random why prophecies were given, like advising Theseus father Aegeus not to released his bulging wine skin. If he hadn’t Theseus would not have been born.

Stephen Fry is a born story-teller and I could listen to him all day tell me all about greek mythology.

Anyone that is interesting in Greek myths and legends that I would different advise this series.

My rating for Heroes is 5 out of 5.
