Cinders (The Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer

1

I wanted to read Cinder after reading Marissa Meyer Heartless book as I really enjoyed the different side to the classic fairytale. Cinder is the first book in the Lunar series which is a retelling of the fairy tale Cinderella. This Cinder is a lot more interesting in this story as she is a cyborg who works as a mechanic to earn her keep within her Legal Guardian family. In the Disney Cinderella, Cinderella has two evil stepsister and in this story she is lucky that one of her stepsister is nice and cares for her.

The story is based in New Beijing where the country is battle which a plague and trying to work out a peace treaty with the Lunar Queen who rules the Moon with the power to control the people around her. Cinder world is turned upside down when the prince of the Commonwealth Kai comes to her to fix his Android and the plague hit close to home. Cinder finds out that she is more than just a Cyborg mechanic and now has to decided between freedom and helping the world.

I really like Marissa Meyer writing style its is easy for me to read with a nice flow with the story. The story builds and builds drawing you more and more into the book and this amazing modern fairytale.  Anyone that like the show Once upon a time or Grimm should gives this book I go.

I have book two Scarlet read and waiting for me to read. I wanted to see what happens next for Cinder and the newly crown Emperor Kai.

I give this book 4 out of 5.

Assassin’s Fate (Fitz and the Fool #3) by Robin Hobb

0

Assassin’s Fate is book 3 in the Fitz and the Fool, this book, this book  resumes where book 2 left off. Fitz is overwhelmed by the skill when he is trying to heal the eldering and Bee has just come out of the Skill portal stones. This book chapter are either from Bee or Fitz  prespected as they both make the journey to Cleeves. Although the book is about Fitz journey to save Bee and Bee survival, their is an interesting storyline regarding the liveships.

My favourite character is Bee as through the books you she her evolution, in this book she realise what she must do as the white prophet of her generation.I found the treatment of Bee to be heart breaking, she is no longer the Bee she was in the first book. I never know how author can write that as If it was me I would be crying while I was writing.

The ended of this book made me cry, I understand why it has been ended in this way I just always wish for I happier ending. Especially when the character have gone through so much. I’m lucky that I’ve got Fitz early stories still to read so I don’t have to say goodbye just yet.

I would recommended this series to anyone that like books with Assissan, magic Dragons and epic journey.

I give this book 4 out of 5

Fool Quest (Fitz and Fool #2) by Robin Hobb

0

Fool’s Quest is book 2 in the Fitz and Fool series, this book follows straight on from Fool’s Assassin. Bee has been kidnapped and Fitz is at Buckkeep trying to save the life of his friend Fool after he stabbed him due to mistaken identity. This book follows Fitz as his world changes dramatically as he tries to save Bee and Fool.

The story build as Fitz deals with Fool, to the finding out that Bee was missing and trying to find her. You can feel his frustration with having to deal with what is expect of him in court with wanting to with all his experience as an assassin.

One of the reason I enjoy this book, is that you are immersed into the world, you are made of the aware that their is more going on then just the main storyline. That everything isn’t magically fixed, that even in a world with magic and Dragons people are just human and have to make hard decisions.

In Fool’s Assissan we do not get to see much the other people in Fitz life they don’t live at Withywood, in this book we are get to see his relationship with old friend and his daughter Nettle we get to see I different side of Fitz. We also hear more about his days as an Assissan to the King making me also what to read the Farseer trilogy, Tawny trilogy, The Liveship Traders and the Rain Chronicles.

One of my favorite characters is Perseverance, we were introduced to him in Fool’s Assissan but he has come into his own in this book with his dedication to serve Fitz and Bee, also the lengths at which he will go to up hold his duty.

I would have tissues to hand when reading as we see grief in its raw form, it’s beautifully written and handle in the story that I would be more surprised if people didn’t cry.

I decided out of the Witt and the Skill I would want to have the Witt. It would be amazing to talk easier to my dogs.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5,

🤓🤓🤓🤓

I have already got Assassin’s Fate  ready and waiting for me to read.

Given to the Sea by Mindy McGinnis

0

Given to the sea was the book I got from the April FairyLoot, the concept of the book seemed interesting but I was still unsure if I would enjoy the book. The book is set in a world where a girl from a certain bloodline is sacrificed to the sea, to stop the sea from sending a wave that would destroy the land. Khosa is the ‘Given’ her purpose in life is to be breed givening the world the next ‘Given’ before she dances to her death in the sea. The book also follows Prince Vincent third inline to a throne he doesn’t want. Dara and Donil the last of their people adopted into the Royal family but not accepted by its people. Finally Witt the leader of thr Pietra people that will do what he must to save his people from a land that doesn’t prosper.

The book is structured that a chapter follows either Khosa, Vincent, Dara and Witt you get to see the world from each of there views. You can see the motivation for certain actions, and a nice view it to what they think of the other characters. This also made me change my opinions of the characters through out the book. Although I never really liked Dara I wanted to as she is this  great warrior woman but I couldn’t get past her attitude.

To be honest I wasn’t emotionally invested into any of the characters, the story gripped me and the characters where interesting but by the end of the book something had happened that changed my opinion of the characters. One of the reasons is that character are neither good or bad they are people with views steeped in history trying their best in a bad situation .

One of the reason the story gripped me is the element of human sacrifice, how Society doesn’t question that a women has give birth to a daughter she never gets to watch her daughter grow up but no she will die. I think it also scary that human sacrifice still goes on today, that even in a modern world people are still strongly influenced by the past.

I look forward to seeing what happens in this series as it seems their world is nearing to the end and that impending doom makes for very interesting stories. The story was also beautiful written make it easy to read which I always appreciate.

I give this story 4 out of 5

Fool’s Assassin (Fitz and The Fool #1) By Robin Hobb

0

I picked up Fool’s Assassin because I liked the look of Assassin’s Fate which is book three in this series. I can’t read books out-of-order so I ended up buying all three. Although this is the first book in this series the main character Fitz is in another series about his early life which start with Assassin Apprentice. I wish I had known that and I would have read those book first, you don’t have to read them to understand the story, I’m just weird and like to follow the timeline correctly.

This book starts with Tom Badgerlock living a quiet life with his wife Molly on the Withywood estate, but Tom is not the normal estate Holder Tom is FitzChivalry a royal bastard who was an Assassin for the royal family as well as a forbidden magic holder. He gave up that life to have a quiet life with his wife but Fitz can no longer hide from his past when it erupts into his present and effecting his future.

When I started this book, it took me a while to find my reading rhythm. The story is a slow burner for me but once I got started I was so intrigued by this world that Robin Hobb has created. I knew that the story was building but I didn’t know to what end, and an end that took me my surprise although when you look back you can see some of the clues.

I enjoyed the fact that part way through the story we started having chapters from another character perspective, you get a better view of the goings on at the Withywood estate. It also made me became more attached to the character of Bee, you see her as she grows and how she deals in a world when she is noticeable different. I want to be Bee friend.

On another note I love the different names that are used like Nettle, Careful, Riddle etc to me it makes this world more unique.

If you want to immersed into another world and taken on a journey then I would give this book a read. I am glad that I have already bought Fool’s Quest and Assassin’s Fate so I don’t have to wait.

I give this book 4 out of 5

FairyLoot April 2017 Unboxing

0

This is my third FairyLoot and I have yet to be disappointed, this months theme was Warrior and Legends and I loved every item. If you would like to subscribe following this link, the next box for sale is June book and its theme is Elementalist.

The first Item I pulled out was a mug designed by Risa Rodi with a quote from A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas.  The quote is ‘To the Starts who Listen and the Dreams that are Answered.’  I love that book series, and the night before the box came this was the quote I was doodling with. The mug is great and now sits with all my other Sarah. J. Maas book etc.

The second item I pulled out was a tote bag that was designed by Miss Phi in collaboration with Fairyloot. I always love a good tote bag, I always carry one when I go out just encase. Now I have swapped my Marvel one to this one, it good quality and can carry several books which is very important. The tote has a quote on from the book The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, I’ve not read that book but it now on my tbr list as I love this quote ‘Madness is a matter of perspective little dreamer.’

I was really exited when I pulled the next Item out as it was a candle by Meraki Candles , I always love the small of their candles and this one did not disappoint with it scent of mint, Marshmallows and candy Floss. When I lit this candle it smells like toasted marshmallows 😍.

I am also a stationary geek so when I saw the Ruby Gemstone Notebook from Portico. It so pretty that I haven’t decided on what I’m going to use it for yet.

The box also contained this charming little pin by House of Wonderland that reminds us to Dream. Which goes beautiful with the Follow your Dreams magnet that Fairyloot created exclusively for this box.

The book that came with his box is Given by the Sea by Mindy McGinnis, a dark fantasy where the world is threated by the sea. This will test loyalties, romance and friendship. I am looking forward to seeing what the book has is store for me.

I can’t wait to see what comes in the next book.

The Quiet Man (Jefferson Winters #4) By James Carol

0

The Quiet Man is book 4 in the Jefferson Winters series, Jefferson Winters is an ex-FBI profiler with a serial killer as a father. The other books in this series in order are Broken Doll, Watch Me and Prey. There is also prequel short stories Presumed Gulity, Hush Little Baby and Open your eyes. The books are all stand alone stories so you dont have to read them in order if you dont want to, but if you anything like me you will end up reading them in order.

Winters has been ask to consult on case in Vancouver where on the 5th August for the past three years a wife has died at the hands of a bomb at their homes. Winters doesn’t have much time to find the bomber before someone life is forever changed, and they lose the trail for another year.

I have described Jefferson Winters as the Sheldon Copper of Crime fiction, he is annoying, to smart for  his own good but you can’t help but love him. I like the fact in this book that we got to see more of his sense of humor with his interaction with detective  Jefferies.

I really enjoy these series of book as Jefferson methods make the books very entertaining to read. As he is only a consultant he has a lot more freedom to do things, as he is not following the ‘book’. Jefferson is always one set ahead everyone, their is always an extra layer to his plans that he doesnt like to share until its already in motion. This alwasy keeps you guessing, which for me is the most important thing  in crime fiction.

If want a different take on profiler book than this is a series that you should give a go.

5 out of 5.
