Book Review: Spellslinger (Spellslinger #1) by Sebastien De Castell

Hi Habib,

The Spellslinger series by Sebastien De Castell has been on my radar for a while now. As book 4 is being published on the 4th October I thought It prefect time to catch up on the series.

Kellen sixteenth birthday is nearing, and he has yet to pass any of his test to become a spellcaster. The closer to his sixteenth birthday the weaker his magic is becoming. Kellen realise that Magic is just a Con game and maybe this is his path to his Mage name.

When a stranger Ferius Parfax rocks into town and she challenges Kellen to a different path. A path he never thought of himself. Ferius Parfax is a Argosi, a mysterious traveller, a women that survive on her wits, and the decks of cards that she keeps in her waistcoat. Ferius is different to anyone else in their village, she is difficult, smart mouth, incredible unpredictable and maybe Kellen only hope of surviving after his sixteen birthday.

Spellslinger world is a colossal in every sense.

To begin with the characters are interesting and unique in equal measure. The lead character is Kellen, he is very smart and the under dog in his village. People underestimate him due to his lack of magic. He is a character that you route for from the beginning and thought out the book.

I would like to go drinking with Ferius Parfax, although I think she would drink me under the table in no time. She is entertaining in the way she deals with the other mage. She doesn’t back down from the threats of magically violence, which made me respect her more.

Together with Kellen and Ferius one of my other favourite character is Reichis a Squirrel Cat with serious attitude. Although he doesn’t turn up until the later half of the book, he has some of the best lines.

“Being around you is like having thorns in all fours paws, you know that?”

He is also very obsessed with getting revenge on people by eating their eyes.

One of the main elements that I picked up from the book, is that everyone believed that they are doing things for the greater good.  There is one element in the book where this is seen and made me want to throw the book across my room. I never guessed the direction and my anger was directed at two of the characters. I have not forgive those character either.

In summary Spellslinger is a book that has great character and a compelling story that will keep you hooked.

My rating for this book is 5 out of 5.
