Book Review: The Girl King by Mimi You

Hi Wô de péngyōu,

I have finished reading my first book of 2019. the book I choice to break in the New Year was The Girl King by Mimi Yu.

Lu has been raised to believe that she will be the first female ruler an Empress without an Emperor.

Her younger sister Min  has grown up in Lin shadow, her place in her court. Until Lu and Mim father name their cousin Seth as the next Emperor and Lin Husband to be. This one action sends Lu and Min down different path both that will change them forever.

Determined to reclaim her birthright Lu goes on the run, to find an army and prove she has the strength rule. While on the run she finds Nokhai, one of the last wolf shifter. Now Nokhai must work with Lu, the daughter of the man who killed his family and his kind.

Left at court Mim hidden power wakes, powers that are forbidden but sought after by people who seek power. Mim most decided will she use the power to help Seth keep the throne or take the throne for herself.

Only one person can rule the Empire, who will it be, and at what cost.

The Girl King has drama, action, magic and a splash of romance.

When I read the synopsis of the book, I thought I would like one sister more than the other. It surprised me that wasn’t the case. I am always drawn to the person with magic ability over the warrior type. At the beginning of the book I did like Mim more than Lu, but as the book progress my opinion of Lu changed and I respected her more.

Mim is a character that divides my opinion.

I feel sorry for her as she is desperate for love from anyone. She is willing to be who ever they want her to be. In other part I find her annoying and that you can tell she is young .She is wiling to ignore facts that don’t fit with the reality she wishes for. Also she is happy to blame other people for the situation she is in, and doesn’t take responsibility for her own actions.

The evolution of Lu and Nokhai relationship thought out the book is one of my favourite element of the book. Especially for Lu side, the people she is friends with are servant. Nokhai isn’t, and though there friendship makes her a better picture.

The Girl King added with a great twist and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

My rating for The Girl King is 4.5 out of 5

I was lucky enough to get hold of The Girl King at YALC, but everyone else doesn’t have to wait much longer as The Girl King hits shelves on the 8th January.
