Book Review: The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

Hello Particeps,

Today review is regarding The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. I have been a fan of Samantha previous series The Bone Season. I was exited to hear about The Priory of the Orange Tree last year I knew I wanted to read it.

Queen Sabran the Ninth of the House of Berethnet rules Inys, like her family has ruled Inys for a thousand years.

To protect her realm from destruction she must conceive a daughter. Still unwed and assassins inching closer to her, she must marry soon or her people will suffer.

Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Sent to keep Sabran safe by using her forbidden magic, and the skills she learnt from the hidden society of mages. She must pretend to by the perfect lady in waiting, never showing the court who she truly is.

Across the dark sea, Tané has trained all her life to be a dragonrider. She is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel, and her dream to end.

Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

A world divided.
A queendom without an heir.
An ancient enemy awakens.

The Priory of the Orange Tree is a fantasy odyssey, a true modern epic.

Samantha Shannon has created and amazing and incredible detailed world. One so layer and rich, although a fantasy world it feels fantastically real.

It’s a battle of Good vs Evil where everyone agrees on who the main Evil is, but have issue getting past their differences. The main area of contention being religion. Religion in The Priory of the Orange Tree is fascinating, how the religion were created and worshipped. Especially when the religion is based on truth but fabrication.

The story is told via 4 POV, this does introduce a lot of characters. When you get a handle on each story the world connects, and you can see how all the pieces work together. The cast of characters are diverse, floored and fascinating. there are times when you might not agree or like things they do, but by the end of the book you are still cheering them on.
