First Book in the Series: Turn a Blind Eye

Brick Lane is taken over by a flash mob, but the dancing stops early when one of the buildings exposes.

Is the explosion an accident or deliberate murder?

DI Maya Rahman knows Brick Lane is where she spent her childhood, now she has to investigate the fire as two bodies are found in the building.

The flash mob means that people didn’t witness anything useful. Without many leads, Maya is facing a complex case which becomes more, horrifying when another body is found. There is something more than meets the eye to these case, but Maya must find the answers before more of East London goes up in flames.

Out of the Ashes has an intriguing plot with interesting characters.

Firstly one of my favourite elements of the book is Maya connection with the East of London and its people. She has grown up in the area so everything is more personal to her. One of the witnesses to the fire is Rosa Feldman, the old lady that runs the local Newsagents. Maya father was friends with her husband. So when Maya is investigating the crime she is also dealing with old memories about her dad, as well as finding out new information about him. In Turn a Blind Eye we find out that Maya father went out to the shops as a child and never came back, in Out of the Ashes we find out a bit more information, I am looking forward to finding out what really happened to him.

Additionally, the investigation engaged me, there were several different leads that took the case in different directions, which kept me on my toes. It’s interesting reading a book regarding crimes against immigrant, with the current tension in the UK at the moment. This makes the book feel incredibly relevant.

Finally, with Out of the Ashes, Vicky Newham has cemented D.I. Maya Raham as a must read British crime detective.

My rating for Out of the Ashes is 4 out of 5.
