Book Review: Lord of Secrets (The Empty Gods, #1) by Breanna Teintze

Hi Filos,

Today is an Advanced reader copy of Lord of Secrets by Breanna Teintze. This is Breanna debut novel and the first book in The Empty Gods series.

Lords of Secrets is published in the UK on the 8th of August 2019.

Magic is poison. Secrets are power. Death is . . . complicated.

Corcoran Gray is an outlaw wizard, he is friendless, penniless and trying to find a way to save his imprisoned grandfather. Life doesn’t become any easier for Gray as he has the tyrannical Mage’s Guild after him who catch up with him when he gets found with a runaway slave called Brix.

Brix may hold away for Gray to save his Grandfather. With her help, all Gray has to do is break out of prison, break into an ancient underground temple and avoid killing himself with his own magic in the process.

Easy.

In theory, it would be easy, but with hidden secrets, questionable loyalties. Gray discovers there is more to life and death in magic than he would ever have thought.

Now Gray must find a way to protect the people he loves, but it could cost him everything, even his soul . . .

Lord of Secrets has one of my favourite opening pages/ first sentence in any fantasy book I have read. It had me smiling.

Corcoran Gray is a character I liked straight away, he is sarcastic, smart, and he is trying to his best in a bad situation. His inner monologue is one of my favourite element of the book. Also Gray has a disability, which does affect his abilities. But it doesn’t stop him.

Another element I enjoyed about Lord of Secrets was the way in which magic worked. That magic poisoned the body, and spells must be written as well as spoken. It was a nice twist on magic in the fantasy genre.

If you like books that have;

  • Magic
  • Adventure
  • Jailbreaks
  • puzzles
  • interesting repartee
  • makes you laugh
  • A character with a disability
  • Necromancy

I always think it is a good sign when after finishing the book, I immediately look to see when the next book is out. I did that with Lord of Secrets, nothing is out yet. But I will be keeping an eye out of it.

Then I would advise picking Lord of Secrets

My rating for Lord of Secrets is 5 out of 5.
