Book Review: A Darker Shade of Magic (Shade of Magic #1) by V.E Schwab

Hi Hoa,

Today review is A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E Schwab. I have had this book on my TBR for a while now, after following V.E Schwab on twitter, and finding her very entertaining I decided to moved the book up on my TBR pile.

Kell is a magician, specifically, he is an Antari, a race magician whose power is in his blood. This unique power gives him to the ability to travel between parallel London’s, Red, Grey, White and Black

Kell was raised in Red London in a country called Arnes, as the adopted son of the King and Queen. He serves his country as an ambassador passing messages to the rulers of the Grey and White London.

Kell has a side business as a smuggler. Supplying people willing to pay for any small glimpse of magic and the other worlds they would never see. This “hobby” is not legal and could have very dangerous consequences.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah (Lila) Bard, a thief with lofty aspirations. Lila first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another London for a proper adventure.

Now powerful magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lilia first need to stay alive.

The world that V.E Schwab has created in A Darker Shade of Magic is Marvellous magical.

A Darker Shade of Magic is the perfect way to start a new series off with a new world. V.E Schwab has been cleaver with her writing as she weaves the plot of the story by introducing the world and character so there is no delay in getting into the story. I find her writing style really easy to read, easy to fall into her world.

Kell and Lila are the two main characters in A Darker Shade of Magic and both are interesting and complex characters. I love that Lila jumps both feet first into any given situation. Also, Lila doesn’t have a filter between her brain and mouth which made for some several funny moments.

I am fascinated with the different versions of London, the way in which they are similar but very different. That certain location is the same in all of the worlds.

I am looking forward to seeing what happens next for Kell and Lila.

My rating for A Darker Shade of Magic is 4 out of 5.
