Book Review: Dragonslayer (Dragonslayer #1) by Duncan M. Hamilton

Hi Cara,

I’ve added to my fictional Dragon collection by reading Dragonslayer by Duncan .M. Hamilton. Dragonslayer is the first book in the Dragonslayer series that follows Knight of the Silver Circle and Servants of the Crown.

Guilot dal Villevaurais once was a member of the King’s personal guard.

Until one day his wife, child and job were taken away from him. He now spends his days drinking to escape what he has lost.

Out of the blue he is is ordered by the Prince Bishop to find and destroy a dragon. No one has seen a dragon in centuries, people believed they were extinct. Gill and the Prince Bishop have a history, they would not call each other a friend. That makes Gill very wary of the Prince Bishop motives. But as the last living member of the Chevaliers of the Silver Circle, the group created to fight Dragon is Gill job to stop the Dragon before more lives are lost

While on his journey to the capital to tell the King of the Dragon. Gill rescues Soléne, a young barmaid that is about to be burned as a witch.
Gill believes Soléne to be innocent, but when they get into some trouble it’s her raw untrained power that saved them. But magic is forbidden, but the Prince Bishop believes magic will be the key to both destroying the dragon and replacing the young, untried King he pretends to serve with a more pliable figurehead.

Between Gill’s rusty swordsmanship and Solène’s unstable magic, what could go wrong?

Dragonslayer is a Dragon hunting adventure, wrapped in magic, mistrust and wine.

One of my favourite elements of Dragonslayer is the fact we get to see the POV of the dragon. I understand why he wants revenge on mankind. It is also interesting seeing the Dragon internal battle as he is not normally into deathly revenge.

Another element I found fascinating is Dragonslayer was how magic worked. The different from natural to learned magic, to the age you learn. I am looking forward to seeing how Soléne abilities grow thought out the series.

Duncan has created an interesting bunch of character, Soléne and Gill make great lead characters. Both not perfect but doing the best they can in this situation. Gill storyline is his redemption from a drunk lord to a hero. Where Soléne is learning to trust her own abilities. Can I say I love the way Soléne magic reacts when she is threated, it made me smile every time.

Let’s take about the Prince Bishop, I picture him with one of those faced that you want to punch. I am all for someone who has a thirst for knowledge but he is using it for the good of himself.

Dragonslayer is told in 4 POV, Gill, Soléne, Prince Bishop and the Dragon. I enjoyed that I got to read all 4 POV as it made the book more interesting and fast-paced. I thought I knew where the story was going but the plot diverted in a couple of direction I didn’t see.

Dragonslayer is a great addition into the fantasy dragon fiction.

My rating for Dragonslayer is 4 out of 5
