Book Review: Sorcerer to the Crown (Sorcerer Royal #1) by Zen Cho

.Hi Cara,

Today review is regarding the audiobook of Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho.

I became aware of the Sorcerer Royal series when I bought The True Queen which is the second book in the series. As I prefer reading books in order I pick up Sorcerer to the Crown, and I am glad I did.

At his wit’s end, Zacharias Wythe, freed slave, eminently proficient magician, and Sorcerer Royal of the Unnatural Philosophers—one of the most respected organizations throughout all of Britain—ventures to the border of Fairyland to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up.

But when his adventure brings him in contact with a most unusual comrade, a woman with immense power and an unfathomable gift, he sets on a path which will alter the nature of sorcery in all of Britain—and the world at large…

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

Sorcerer to the Crown is truly magical in more than one way.

The mixture of fantasy and magic in a historical London blends perfectly together to make you believe that it could all be true.

Sorcerer to the Crown has two leading characters, we have Zacharias the sorcerer royal. ‘Adopted’ by the previous Sorcerer Royal due to his magical ability. He is not well-liked due to the colour of his skin, and that he was born to be a slave.

The second lead is Prunella Gentleman, ophan girl raised ina school that teaches girls to suppress their magic. Prunella is of mixed raced, with an English father and Indian mother. Prunella wants more to her life than what the school will provide her.

I loved the fact that the main characters In Sorcerer to the Crown are of a different race. Which is rare to see in high society in historical England. It gave the book more depth showing racism that they face in polite society.

There are periods in the book that I don’t agree with the action that either Zacharias or Prunella take. But overall I like them both. they are smart and talented and the way they hold themselves when attacked due to the colour of gender is amazing to read.

Regarding the plot of Sorcerer to the Crown it has all the intrigue of historical society politics. With its plotting and backstabbing with the mystery of magic.

Sorcerer to the Crown is perfect for anyone that loves historical fiction with magic and faes.

My rating for Sorcerer to the Crown is 4 out of 5.
