Books I am looking forward to February 2020

Hi Cara,

We have survived the first month of 2020. Now it’s time to look at the amazing books coming out in February.

4th February 2020
Ember Queen (Ash Princess Trilogy, #3)Book: Ember Queen
Author: Laura Sebastian.
Synopsis: Princess Theodosia was a prisoner in her own country for a decade. Renamed the Ash Princess, she endured relentless abuse and ridicule from the Kaiser and his court. But though she wore a crown of ashes, there is fire in Theo’s blood. As the rightful heir to the Astrean crown, it runs in her veins. And if she learned nothing else from her mother, she learned that a Queen never cowers.

Now free, with a misfit army of rebels to back her, Theo must liberate her enslaved people and face a terrifying new enemy: the new Kaiserin. Imbued with a magic no one understands, the Kaiserin is determined to burn down anyone and everything in her way.

The Kaiserin’s strange power is growing stronger, and with Prinz Søren as her hostage, there is more at stake than ever. Theo must learn to embrace her own power if she has any hope of standing against the girl she once called her heart’s sister.

Gem’s Thoughts: Ember Queen is the third and final book in the Ash Princess Trilogy. I loved both of the previous books Ash Princess and Lady Smoke. Theo story has brought me to tears, so I am hoping she gets her happy ever after.

The Queen's Assassin (Queen's Secret, #1)Book: The  Queen’s Assassin
Author: Melissa De la Cruz
Synopsis: Caledon Holt is the Kingdom of Renovia’s deadliest weapon. No one alive can best him in brawn or brains, which is why he’s the Guild’s most dangerous member and the Queen’s one and only assassin. He’s also bound to the Queen by an impossible vow–to find the missing Deian Scrolls, the fount of all magical history and knowledge, stolen years ago by a nefarious sect called the Aphrasians.

Shadow has been training all her life to follow in the footsteps of her mother and aunts–to become skilled enough to join the ranks of the Guild. Though magic has been forbidden since the Aphrasian uprising, Shadow has been learning to control her powers in secret, hoping that one day she’ll become an assassin as feared and revered as Caledon Holt.

When a surprise attack brings Shadow and Cal together, they’re forced to team up as assassin and apprentice to hunt down a new sinister threat to Renovia. But as Cal and Shadow grow closer, they’ll uncover a shocking web of lies and secrets that may destroy everything they hold dear. With war on the horizon and true love at risk, they’ll stop at nothing to protect each other and their kingdom in this stunning first novel in the Queen’s Secret series.

Gem Thoughts: The Queen’s Assassin is the first book in Melisa Queen’s secret series. I love books with forbidden magic, assassin, romance wrapped in a quest. I hope The Queen’s Assassin lives up to expectations.

Golden in Death (In Death, #50)Book: Golden in Death
Author: J.D Robb
Synopsis: Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body―and killed him.

After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team―and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn’t been exposed―it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close―though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless. While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she’s dealing with either a madman―or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims.

Gem’s Thoughts: Golden in Death is book fifty, 5-0 in the In Death series. I am always happy to visit Dallas and Roarke. Also, I can’t believe I would read 50 books of one series.

Perfect Kill (D.I. Callanach, #6)Book: Perfect Kill

Alone, trapped in the darkness and with no way out, Bart Campbell knows that his chances of being found alive are slim.

DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach are working on separate cases that soon collide as it becomes clear that the men and women being shipped to France are being traded for women trafficked into Scotland.
With so many lives at stake, they face an impossible task – but there’s no option of failure when Bart and so many others will soon be dead…

Gem’s Thoughts: I got an early ebook copy of Perfect Kill, my review can be found HERE. Perfect kill is perfect for any crime thriller fans.

Witness XBook: Witness X
Author: S.E Moorhead
Synopsis: She’s the only one who can access the truth…

Fourteen years ago, the police caged a notorious serial killer who abducted and butchered two victims every February. He was safe behind bars. Wasn’t he?

But then another body is discovered, and soon enough, the race is on to catch the real killer. Neuropsychologist Kyra Sullivan fights to use a new technology that accesses the minds of the witnesses, working with the police to uncover the truth. Will Kyra discover the person behind the murders, and if so, at what cost? And how far will she go to ensure justice is served?

Gem’s Thoughts: Sci-fi world with a serial killer case, sign me up. I love it when genre comes together.

11th February 2020.

Heart of Flames (Crown of Feathers, #2) Book: Heart of Flames
Author: Nicki Pau-Preto
Synopsis: Veronyka, Tristan, and Sev must stop the advancing empire from destroying the Phoenix Riders in this fiery sequel to Crown of Feathers, which #1 New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake calls “absolutely unforgettable!”

You are a daughter of queens.

The world is balanced on the edge of a knife, and war is almost certain between the empire and the Phoenix Riders.

Like Nefyra before you, your life will be a trial by fire.

Veronyka finally got her wish to join the Riders, but while she’s supposed to be in training, all she really wants to do is fly out to defend the villages of Pyra from the advancing empire. Tristan has been promoted to Master Rider, but he has very different ideas about the best way to protect their people than his father, the commander. Sev has been sent to spy on the empire, but maintaining his cover may force him to fight on the wrong side of the war. And Veronyka’s sister, Val, is determined to regain the empire she lost—even if it means inciting the war herself.

Such is your inheritance. A name. A legacy. An empire in ruin.

As tensions reach a boiling point, the characters all find themselves drawn together into a fight that will shape the course of the empire—and determine the future of the Phoenix Riders. Each must decide how far they’re willing to go—and what they’re willing to lose in the process.

I pray you are able to pass through the flames.
Gem’s Thoughts: The ending of Crown of Feather was on fire. So I’m excited to see what happen in Heart of Flames the second book in the Crown of Feather series.

The Unspoken Name (The Serpent Gates, #1)

Book: The Unspoken Name
 Author: A.K. Larkwood
Synopsis: Csorwe does — she will climb the mountain, enter the Shrine of the Unspoken, and gain the most honored title: sacrifice.

But on the day of her foretold death, a powerful mage offers her a new fate. Leave with him, and live. Turn away from her destiny and her god to become a thief, a spy, an assassin—the wizard’s loyal sword. Topple an empire, and help him reclaim his seat of power.

But Csorwe will soon learn – gods remember, and if you live long enough, all debts come due.

Gem’s Thoughts: I have seen The Unspoken name a lot on social media. I was lucky to get hold of an ARC copy and it does live up to the hype. My review can be found HERE.

The Shadows Between UsBook: The Shadows between us.
Author: Tricia Levenseller
Synopsis: Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King

2) Marry him

3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

Gem’s Thoughts: I like it when the leading lady is villainous, it gives a different twist to saving the King story.
