Book Review: Tricked (The Iron Druid Chronicles #4) by Kevin Hearne

Hi Cara,

My Iron Druid Chronicles binge is going well as I am now on book 4 which is called Tricked.

Druid Atticus O’Sullivan hasn’t stayed alive for more than two millennia without a fair bit of Celtic cunning.

So when vengeful thunder gods come Norse by Southwest looking for payback, Atticus, with a little help from the Navajo trickster god Coyote, lets them think that they’ve chopped up his body in the Arizona desert.

But the mischievous Coyote is not above a little sleight of paw, and Atticus soon finds that he’s been duped into battling bloodthirsty desert shapeshifters called skinwalkers. Just when the Druid thinks he’s got a handle on all the duplicity, betrayal comes from an unlikely source. If Atticus survives this time, he vows he won’t be fooled again. Famous last words.

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

Tricked has many tricks in it.

Due to the implications of Hammered Atticus, Oberon and Granvaile are now on the move hiding from angry Gods. To fake their deaths they need the help of Coyote. Faking their deaths and the trouble Coyote ropes them into gives the story a lot of action and drama.

I have read books previous books that deal with Navaja culture. I enjoyed this take on coyote and skinwalkers as they were darker and more dangerous. it was interesting to see Atticus deal with magic that he hasn’t come across. That it is not as easy for Atticus to solve.

One of my favourite element of the book was Atticus and Granuaile faking their deaths. I kind of want to no more about the other ways that Atticus has faked his death.

A change in one of Atticus’s friendships surprised me especially when it ended up hurting Oberon. I may (really) want that character to suffer. No one hurts Oberon.

Another element that I enjoyed about Tricked was we got to find out more about Atticus’s past and his relationship. It was good to see more emotion from him, as he doesn’t like to force on his emotions.

Below are my favourite quotes from Tricked;

“Guilt ferrets are bastards.”

“I am Snugglepumkin. Hear me roar.”

“Poxy Shitweasel.”

Also a massive shout out to Oberon to his scientific test with the name Snugglepumking, and betting with Sausages.

My rating for Tricked is 4.8 out of 5.
