Book Review: Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko

Hi Cara,

The review on my blog today is Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko. Raybearer is Jordan Ifueko debut novel, and its release date is 14th April 2020.

Nothing is more important than loyalty.
But what if you’ve sworn to protect the one you were born to destroy?

Tarisai has always longed for the warmth of a family. She was raised in isolation by a mysterious, often absent mother known only as The Lady. The Lady sends her to the capital of the global empire of Aritsar to compete with other children to be chosen as one of the Crown Prince’s Council of 11. If she’s picked, she’ll be joined with the other Council members through the Ray, a bond deeper than blood.

That closeness is irresistible to Tarisai, who has always wanted to belong somewhere. But The Lady has other ideas, including a magical wish that Tarisai is compelled to obey: Kill the Crown Prince once she gains his trust. Tarisai won’t stand by and become someone’s pawn—but is she strong enough to choose a different path for herself?

Raybearer is a great coming of age story, especially going against expectations.

Jordan has created an amazing multilayered world that mixes culture and magic. The idea of the council and the ability to protect the King is something I haven’t read before, and an aspect I enjoyed.

The book’s pacing changes throughout. As at the beginning was set at a good pace than it slowed down in the middle and sped up at the end. Raybearer part 3 and part 4 were my favourites. They had more action, drama and the bigger picture was more visible.

Tarisai is the leading lady of Raybearer, I liked that she is smart, innocent and has a strong faith in justice and wanting what is best and fair for all.  Also, she is extremely loyal to her friends at her own detriment. Overall I really liked Tarisari.

My favourite aspects of Raybearer.

  • Friendship and Romance.
  • Magic and the Hallows
  • The different culture in the Empire
  • The Crown Princes Council
  • Revelations
  • Great characterizations.

My least favourite aspects of Raybearer

  • Mixed Pacing.

My Rating for Raybearer is 4 out of 5.
