Crime Fiction, Fantasy, This months Books

Books I am looking forward to May 2020

Hi Cara,

With the world on lockdown publishers and authors have pushed back some book release date, this means there is only a handful of books that I am looking forward to this month.

5th May 2020

Book: Aurora Burning ( The Aurora Cycle #2)

Author: Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Synopsis: First, the bad news: an ancient evil—you know, your standard consume-all-life-in-the-galaxy deal—is about to be unleashed. The good news? Squad 312 is standing by to save the day. They’ve just got to take care of a few small distractions first.

Like the clan of gremps who’d like to rearrange their favourite faces.

And the cadre of illegit GIA agents with creepy flowers where their eyes used to be, who’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on Auri.

Then there’s Kal’s long-lost sister, who’s not exactly happy to see her baby brother, and has a Syldrathi army at her back. With half the known galaxy on their tails, Squad 312 has never felt so wanted.

When they learn the Hadfield has been found, it’s time to come out of hiding. Two centuries ago, the colony ship vanished, leaving Auri as its sole survivor. Now, its black box might be what saves them. But time is short, and if Auri can’t learn to master her powers as a Trigger, the squad and all their admirers are going to be deader than the Great Ultrasaur of Abraaxis IV.

Gem’s Thoughts: I must admit I haven’t read Aurora Rising, I am planning an Aurora Rising and Aurora Burning double binge.

Book: The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea

Author: Maggie Tokuda-Hall

Synopsis: Aboard the pirate ship Dove, Flora the girl takes on the identity of Florian the man to earn the respect and protection of the crew. For Flora, former starving urchin, the brutal life of a pirate is about survival: don’t trust, don’t stick out, and don’t feel. But on this voyage, as the pirates prepare to sell their unsuspecting passengers into slavery, Flora is drawn to the Lady Evelyn Hasegawa, who is en route to a dreaded arranged marriage with her own casket in tow. Flora doesn’t expect to be taken under Evelyn’s wing, and Evelyn doesn’t expect to find such a deep bond with the pirate Florian.

Soon the unlikely pair set in motion a wild escape that will free a captured mermaid (coveted for her blood, which causes men to have visions and lose memories) and involve the mysterious Pirate Supreme, an opportunistic witch, and the all-encompassing Sea itself.

Gem’s Thoughts: Pirates, Mermaids and a witch in one book, three things I love in one book, this is what got my attention. The plot of the mermaid, the witch and the sea is what makes me want to pick up the book.

12th May 2020

Book: House of Dragons

Author: Jessica Cluess

Synopsis: When the Emperor dies, the five royal houses of Etrusia attend the Call, where one of their own will be selected to compete for the throne. It is always the oldest child, the one who has been preparing for years to compete in the Trial. But this year is different. This year, these five outcasts will answer the call….

THE LIAR: Emilia must hide her dark magic or be put to death.

THE SOLDIER: Lucian is a warrior who has sworn to never lift a sword again.

THE SERVANT: Vespir is a dragon trainer whose skills alone will keep her in the game.

THE THIEF: Ajax knows that nothing is free–he must take what he wants.

THE MURDERER: Hyperia was born to rule and will stop at nothing to take her throne.

Gem Thoughts: I love the idea of 5 houses battling for the throne. I like that its five outcasts to know what the trials will be.

Book: Rogue (Marc Danes #5)

Author: James Swallow

Synopsis: In modern espionage, every action has a reaction. One wrong move could sink an entire region into turmoil – even war.

Ex-MI6 operative Marc Dane understands this better than anyone. Dedicating his life to protecting the country means he’s collected enemies, and a lot of them.

But for those hellbent on bringing the West to its knees, each failed plot has one thing in common: The Rubicon Group, the elite private intelligence agency, and Dane’s employer. Destroy Rubicon, and the world order falls with it.

With the clock ticking, Dane, along with sniper partner Lucy Keyes, must unpick a monstrous and deadly conspiracy that stretches from the marinas of Monaco to the mountains of Mozambique – one that threatens not only Rubicon, but ultimately the lives of millions of innocent civilians. And time is fast running out . . .

Gem’s Thoughts: I have previously read the Marc Dane series and enjoyed the action-packed books. It sounds like what has been building in the 4 previously book come to a head in Rogue.
