Book Review: Honor Among Thieves (The Honors #1) by Rachel Caine & Ann Aguirre

Hi Cara

The review on my blog today is Honor Among Thieves by Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre. Honor Among Thieves was on my want to read list back in March 2018, so it’s great that I’ve finally got round to reading it.

Synopsis

Petty criminal Zara Cole has a painful past that’s made her stronger than most, which is why she chose life in New Detroit instead of moving with her family to Mars. In her eyes, living inside a dome isn’t much better than a prison cell.

Still, when Zara commits a crime that has her running scared, jail might be exactly where she’s headed. Instead, Zara is recruited into the Honors, an elite team of humans selected by the Leviathan—a race of sentient alien ships—to explore the outer reaches of the universe as their passengers.

Zara seizes the chance to flee Earth’s dangers, but when she meets Nadim, the alien ship she’s assigned, Zara starts to feel at home for the first time. But nothing could have prepared her for the dark, ominous truths that lurk behind the alluring glitter of starlight.

Opnion

Honor Among Thieves brings an action-filled Sci-Fi adventure with its own mystery.

Right off the bat, I was enchanted by Zara Cole as a character. Especially her need to know the reason behind why she is having to do something or the reason for a rule. Zara isn’t perfect but she grows to be a better person throughout Honor Among Thieves

One of my favourite element of Honor Among Thieves is the bond/relationship between Zara and her Leviathan ship Nadim. They bonded quickly but not smoothly which creates some great moments. Particularly the moment when Zara and Bea treat Nadim as a person and not just a ship.

Another element I enjoyed was Zara and Bea friendship. Zara has major trust issues and it was nice seeing there friendship blooms, and how well they work together.

Honor Among Thieves has great action scene that takes place in space and closes quarters. By having a different type of action made the book fast-paced and interesting. There is more action in the last third which meant I stayed up late to finish as I needed to know what happened.

Below are some of my favourite quotes from Honor Among Thieves;

“It’s What I hated about the whole world, back on Earth. All the rules you had to follow without knowing why, and if you asked, you got branded difficult and damaged. Well, I am difficult. I am damaged.”

“I don’t have any idea how to be a rogue.” “First rule; more belts. Second rule: no more rules.”

“Holy Shit, I’m listening to an alien.”

My favourite aspects of Honor Among Thieves;

  • The Humour
  • The Action
  • How humans would react to the aliens
  • The mystery

My least favourite aspects of Honor Among Thieves

  • The unresolved issues on earth
  • The-pacing dropped in the middle.

My rating for Honor Among Thieves is 4 out of 5.
