Book Review: House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah. J. Maas

,Hi Cara,

Today review is House of Earth and Blood. This is the first book in Sarah. J. Maas adult fantasy series called Crescent City.

Bound by blood.
Tempted by desire.
Unleashed by destiny.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

House of Earth and Blood blew my mind. It has mystery, magic, romance, action and lots of other different emotions.

I was drawn into the story straight away and the characters. At the beginning of the book, I remembered the synopsis and what it could mean for certain characters. I did end up pleading to the pages that Sarah wasn’t going to do what I thought she was going to do. (BTW she did.) The plot and writing style is one where you don’t want to put the book down, is so easy to read and entertaining that you’re happy to lose time reading it.

The world in which House of Earth and Blood is in is captivating. The way the world is split into houses and that humans are the lowest class of people. Also that Crescent City is sectioned off with each house running an area each. This made the city feel more important as each section has its own characteristics and dangers.

House of Earth and Blood has an interesting bunch of characters. I was invested and emotionally connected to them from the first chapter. The main two characters are Bryce Quinian and Hunt Athalar. My favourite aspect is their banter, snark, thinking/ acting before thinking. the way in which their walls come down was beautiful to read. Another character I liked was Ruhn Danaan, the ‘Chosen One.’ I liked his attitude to the tile and the way he deals with firecracker Bryce.

In the last 150 pages, I cried my eyes out, Sarah. J, Maas is amazing at putting the thumbscrews on my heart. I can not read or think about ;

“My friends are with me and I am not afraid.”

without crying, I am surprised I could read through the tears.

I am now hooked and I can’t wait to find out what happens next in Crescent City.

My Rating for House of Earth and Blood is 5 out of 5.
