Book Review: Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Hi Cara,

The Review on my blog today is Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff. Aurora rising is the first book in the Aurora Cycle.

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions.

Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They’re not the heroes we deserve. They’re just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

Aurora Rising is a Sci-fi adventure that is all about the cast of different and weird characters.

In the beginning, it took me a couple of chapters to get hooked on the story. Once I was, I finished the rest of the book in one night. One thing after another happens to the character and you can’t put the book down as you want to know what is going to happen next.

I loved how different all the character are in Squad 312, they really are a mix of personalities. It great seeing the people know one wanted finally find a place.

The plot of Aurora Rising has many different elements from fight to a heist, it has something for everyone. My favourite element is the heist, I loved the planning and execution of it all.

There is a moment in the book that should have made me cry but it didn’t. It was a beautiful and emotional moment. The issue is that one of the characters involved in this moment, I hadn’t clicked with. It didn’t pack the emotional punch I think was expected.

Aurora Rising story is told in Points of View of all the character in squad 312. This helped keep the pace up as something was going on or you were finding something out about them. One of my favourites is Zila straight to the point chapters my favourite one is;

“Hmm.

My current situation could be adequately described as …

…suboptimal.”

Another element I liked is the Uniglass additional information, I loved the extra information it helped build the world up more for me. I especially loved how sassy, sarcastic comments and commentary. I would love to know its opinion of the trouble that squad 312 gets up to.

Aurora Rising writing style is one is that is easy to read, it effortless. This is a writing style that anyone could read with no trouble.

I am glad I already have the second book Aurora Burning ready and waiting so I don’t have to wait long to see what trouble the crew have gotten up to.

My Rating for Aurora Rising is 4 out of 5.
