Book Review: The Puppet Show (Washington Poe #1) by M.W Craven

Hi Cara,

The Puppet Show was a book I recieved via my Goldsboro first edition subscription back in 2018. I am wondering why I took so long to pick up this book.

A serial killer is burning people alive in the Lake District’s prehistoric stone circles. He leaves no clues and the police are helpless.

When his name is found carved into the charred remains of the third victim, disgraced detective Washington Poe is brought back from suspension and into an investigation, he wants no part of.

Reluctantly partnered with the brilliant but socially awkward civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw, the mismatched pair uncover a trail that only he is meant to see. The elusive killer has a plan and for some reason Poe is part of it.

As the body count rises, Poe discovers he has far more invested in the case than he could have possibly imagined. And in a shocking finale that will shatter everything he’s ever believed about himself, Poe will learn that there are things far worse than being burned alive…

The Puppet Show reminds me of why I love Crime Fiction.

One of my favourite aspect of The Puppet Show is the Characters Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw. I love how Poe doesn’t care about work politics and pissing people off if it helps solves the case. Where Tilly is a brilliant genius who provides amazing technical skills but lack social skills. She takes things literally and doesn’t have a filter between brain and mouth. I loved that about her and those moments made my laugh out loud. Also the way they meet as it shows a lot about them in a very small period.

The plot and pacing of The Puppet Show kept me engaged and hooked. There wasn’t a dull moment in the book for me. The case that Poe gets pulled into kept me guessing, the direction the case went into surprised me. As every new clue or piece of information comes to light took the case into the different avenue. The ending left me with my mouth agape. It’s smart as when the killer has been revealed it makes sense.

Overall The Puppet Show is a great British crime thrilling mystery that any crime fan would love.

I wished I had picked the series up earlier so I could have the next two books from Goldsboro to match this book. But all that now matters is I’ve ordered the next two and I can’t wait to read them.

My Rating for The Puppet Show is 5 out of 5
