Book Review: The Dark Archive (The Invisible Library #7) by Genevieve Cogman

Hi Cara,

The review on my blog takes me back to the world of the Invisible Library. The Dark Archive is book seven in the series by Genevieve Cogman.

  1. The Invisible Library
  2. The Masked City
  3. The Burning Page
  4. The Lost Plot
  5. The Mortal Word
  6. The Secret Chapter

A mysterious archive. A powerful enemy. And a cunning plan.

Danger is part of the day job for a Librarian spy. So Irene’s hoping for a relaxing weekend. However, her jaunt to Guernsey proves no such thing. Instead of retrieving a rare book, she’s almost assassinated, Kai is poisoned and Vale barely escapes with his life. Then the attacks continue in London – targeting those connected with the Fae-dragon peace treaty.

Irene knows she must stop the plot before the treaty fails. Or someone dies. But when Irene and friends are trapped underground, in a secret archive, things don’t look so good. Then an old enemy demands vengeance, and a shocking secret is revealed. Can Irene really seize victory from chaos?

The Dark Archive reminds me why Irene is one of my favourites heroines.

I knew The Dark Archive was going to be action-packed when it starts off with kidnap and assassination attempts. I also found it funny how unfazed Irene is about the attempts after everything she has been through.

The plot of The Dark Archive has a feel of Sherlock Holmes, if Sherlock had to deal with Fae, dragons and multiple different worlds. Characters from previous books make an appearance and this adds to the drama, danger and revelations.  Although it would help to read the previous books you can read this book as a stand-alone. As the story is self-contained, you can read this book as a self-contained. But it will leave you wanting more especially with the epilogue. (Is it Hydra, SHEILD thing going on

In The Dark Archive, we are introduced to two new characters. One character Irene new apprentice and Shan Yuan one of Kai brothers. Catherine took me a bit to warm up to where I would happily punch Shan Yuan.

Irene, Kai and Val are in strong form in The Dark Archive. They show why they make a good team with the way they work together. It’s great that they have each other backs.

Overall the pace is fast, the story is gripping with great action, revelation and mystery. If I didn’t need to sleep I would have finished it in one night.

My Rating for The Dark Archive is 5 out of 5.

Thank you to Pan Macmillan, Jamie Lee Nardone and Stephen Haskin for gifting me a finished copy of The Dark Archive for review.
