Book Review: The Shadow between Us by Tricia Levenseller

Hi Cara,

Today I am reviewing The Shadow Between us by Tricia Levenseller. All the previous books if Tricia I have read I have enjoyed. The synopsis of The Shadow between us really sold me on wanting to read this book.

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

The Shadows between Us has one of my favourite lines;

“They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart.

And they never will.”

It was a great way to introduce Alessandra as you understand the type of woman she is straight away. Alessandra is a great leading lady, she is smart, wicked and driven. Maybe not someone I would be friends with but a great person to read about.

One of my favourite aspects of The Shadow between us is Alessandra and The Shadow King Kallias repartee. I enjoyed reading their battle of wits, and the evolution of their relationship. One moment in particular when Kallias finds out about something personal about Alessandra.

There is a mystery that runs throughout the story regarding Kallias parents as well as attempts on Kallias life. I liked that this plot points as it made the story more than just Alessandra wooing Kallias. The attempts and investigation give the book great action moments. Which helps keep the pace moving quickly.

I also found the writing style incredibly easy to read. It didn’t take me long before I was 75% through and couldn’t believe how quick I read it.

Overall The Shadow between us is a great fantasy, mystery, romance, historical story that great for YA

My Rating for the Shadow Between us is 4.8 out of 5.
