Book Review: Tangled Truths (Death before Dragons #3) by Lindsay Buroker

Hi Cara,

I am continuing my Death before Dragons audiobook binge. I am now on book 3 which is called Tangled Truths.

Synopsis

Dealing with dragons is hard. Dealing with a teenage daughter is even harder.

My new mission involves both. Weird things are happening in Northern Idaho, and my boss is sending me to investigate. Unfortunately, my daughter and ex-husband are vacationing in the town that’s at the center of the trouble. Coincidence? Or is someone targeting them to get at me?

I’m a wanted woman right now. Not only by the criminal werewolves, orcs, and trolls that I’m often hired to kill. But by the Dragon Justice Court.

An organization full of arrogant, powerful dragons is exactly as horrible as it sounds. They’re the last beings you’d want after your family. If I can’t get to the bottom of the mystery and convince the dragons I’m not their enemy, I stand to lose far more than my own life.

Opinion

Tangled Truths is a more personal book for Val as her line of work and actions of Battle Bond are impacting her family.

There are two plot streams in Tangled Truths which intersect with each other. One is regarding another Dragon investigating the incident in Battle Bonds. The second is a case Val takes regarding vandalism and crime impacting a small coastal town. The crimes committed by non-humans. The case takes her to where her ex-husband and daughter are vacationing.

I enjoyed seeing the interaction between Val, her ex and her daughter. Especially when they realise that magic and other beings existing. Val mum also makes an appearance and we get some family history.

The tension between Zav and Val intensifies in Tangled Truth as Zab tries to protect Val, and in doing so the walls between them start to come down. The moment between the two of them in the Hot Tub is hotter than dragon fire.  Tangled Truth seems to me as a catalyst, as the way in which Val works is going to change.

Sidenote the interaction between the colonel and Zav made me cackle.  Tangled Truth has great action, drama and humour that kept me entertained from beginning to end.

My rating for Tangled Truth is 4.2 out of 5.
