Book Review: Shadow and Bone (Shadow and Bone #1) by Leigh Bardugo

Hi Cara,

As Shadow and Bone have been turned into a Netflix show. I thought it would be a good idea to read the books before watching the show.

Synopsis

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Opinion

Shadow and Bone live up to the hype.

The story is told from Alina Starkov point of view as her life is turned upside down. I enjoyed the fact that as the reader I am learning about what is happening, regarding the world and power at the same time as Alina.

I liked Alina, she is a woman that never felt she fit in, as she isn't a social butterfly. If I was in the same situation I think I would act as Alina did.

As I am aware of who is playing the Darkling in the show, I could easily imagine Ben Barnes which made it easy to understand why other people react to him in different ways.

Regarding the plot, I was hooked within a couple of chapters. There is a lot of set up in Shadow and Bones. As the beginning and end have the most action. Where the middle is about the world, the mysteries and Alina character growth.

Overall I enjoyed Shadow and Bone, and U will be continuing reading the series.

My rating for Shadow and Bone is 4.8 out of 5
