Book Review: Soulbinder (Spellslinger #4) by Sebastien De Castell

Hi Hoa,

Soulbinder is the last book in my Sebastien De Castell Spellslinger series binge, I will have to wait till next year to get my next fix.

Kellen and his business partner and squirrel cat Reichis are on their own.

They have heard rumours about a Monastery in where they can cure the ShadowBlack. The Ebony Abby is a mysteries Monastery that no outsider is able to find. On route to find Ebony Abby Kellen and Reichis are separated, to find away back together Kellen is going to have to go deeper into the shadow.

Sebastien De Castell made me cry.

I have become so emotionally invested in the characters that there is one part of the story that brought me to tears. I was slightly cursing his name at this part. (Ok more than slightly)

Soulblinder has a more of a serious feeling to it. There is more is at stake especially as Kellen is on his own for the majority of the book. I did miss his banter between him and the other characters especially Reichis. I understand why he was separated as it the only way for him to grow.

They do have some great interaction before they are split up, which I am happy about.  Below is one of my favourites.

“Don’t try to deny it,”Reichis said.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“Yes, you did. You whimpered and I heard, “But, Reichis how could I possibly have known that I was leading us into a death trap set by my own people? I mean, sure, you warned me that this talk of a secret monastery in the desert where monks could cure me of the shadow black was a scam, but you know me: I’m an idiot. An idiot who never listens to his smarter and much better-looking business partner.”

in particular I enjoy the elements of these stories where each side that Kellen and his crew are dealing with people who think they are the heroes in this story. Kellen ends up in the middle trying to do the best in a very bad situation.

Soulbinder left me more intrigued with the abilities of the Shadowblack. I would never of predicted the different ways that it affects people. It’s a lot similar to the Jan’Tep magic structure than Ke’heops would like.  By the way my opinion of Ke’heop and Shalla has not changed.

By the end of the book, a wider world has open for Kellen I am interested in seeing what type of trouble he will get into.

My rating for Soulblinder is 5 out of 5.
