Book Review: Perfect Prey (D.I. Callanach #2) by Helen Sarah Fields

Hi Cara,

I have backtracked and read (listened) to Perfect Prey which is the second book in the D.I. Callanach series. The first book I ever read in this series was Perfect Silence. Which is the 4th book in the series, So it’s good to get some history.

In the midst of a rock festival, a charity worker is sliced across the stomach. He dies minutes later. In a crowd of thousands, no one saw his attacker. The following week, the body of a primary school teacher is found in a dumpster in an Edinburgh alley, strangled with her own woollen scarf.

DI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach have no motive and no leads – until around the city, graffitied on buildings, words appear describing each victim.

It’s only when they realise the words are appearing before rather than after the murders, that they understand the killer is announcing his next victim…and the more innocent the better.

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

Perfect Prey brings murder into the internet age.

I listened to Perfect Prey and I was super impressed with the voice-over actor Robin Laing and the accents he does. The accents where spot on and all the voices are distinctive.

Now on to the main case, the different murder, suspects and plot grabbed my attention. I was forever guessing who was behind it. I did guess correctly in the end.

There is another investigation going on regarding cyber theft, ran by D.C.I Edger from Scotland Yard. On how I loathed Edger, I would happily be arrested for punching him in his pompous, arrogant, privliaged face. The way he runs his investigation is very different from Ava and Luc style. He is the perfect example of why the Scottish hate the English.

Luc and Ava are both going through things that make them prickly to deal with. I don’t always agree with there choices or actions. But it does add to the drama.

My love for Ava, Luc and the rest of the MIT grow with Perfect Prey, as I learnt things about them that I didn’t know,

Any of the D.I Callanch books can be read as a standalone, but you get so much more by reading them all.

The books in order are;

4. Perfect Silence

5. Perfect Crime.

The next book in the series is Perfect Kill which is out 6th Feb 2020.

My rating for Perfect Prey is 4.5 out of 5.
