Book Review: The Thursday Murder Club (The Thursday Murder Club #1) by Richard Osman

Hi Cara,

I have heard so much about Richard Osman, The Thursday Murder Club. That I needed to read it to see if it is as good as everyone says it is.

Four septuagenarians with a few tricks up their sleeves
A female cop with her first big case
A brutal murder
Welcome to…
The Thursday Murder Club

In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves The Thursday Murder Club. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves.

When a local developer is found dead with a mysterious photograph left next to the body, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case. As the bodies begin to pile up, can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer, before it’s too late?

(synopsis from goodreads.com)

The Thursday Murder Club has mystery, murder and a lot of humour heart. I never thought a murder mystery would leave me feeling warm and fuzzy.

The Thursday Murder Club is told in 1st and 3rd person perspective. With multiple POV and even diary entry. I thought that this might be too much but it wasn’t. Especially enjoyed Joyce diary entries. I loved the mixture of information about the murders, her life and cooking.

The cast of characters is my favourite aspect of The Thursday Murder Club. Joyce, Elizabeth, Ibrahim and Ron are the members of The Thursday Murder Club. There are all very different, and maybe if they weren’t in the club, they wouldn’t be friends. But they have now got a great friendship. I like how they have different strengths and work well together. I would be happy if any of them were my grandparents.

A special shout to Elizabeth. I want to know what her job title was. Also if I was ever in trouble or need help I would want someone like Elizabeth helping me out.

One of my favourite parts of the book, includes DCI Hudson, a couch, cake and booze. You should never underestimate old people. It reminded me of the film R.E.D, instead of Retired extremely dangerous it should be retired extremely determined. Nothing stops them even when it might mean breaking the law. (More bending the law haha)

The mystery is really interesting, I liked there is a couple going on and it trying to figure out if they are connected or not.

This book is all about the cast of characters, which makes me hope that when I retire I can find my own Thursday Murder Club.

The story is fast-paced and entertaining throughout. I was never bored. Now I am ready to pass the book on to my Gran, mum and dad. Which is a first for any book I have reviewed in the last three years.

My Rating for The Thursday Murder Club is 5 out of 5.
