Book Review: Troy (Stephen Fry’s Great Mythology #3) by Stephen Fry

Hi Cara,

I have previously listened to Mythos and Heroes: Mortal and Monster. When I heard that he was doing a third book I knew I wanted to listen to Troy.

The story of Troy speaks to all of us – the kidnapping of Helen, a queen celebrated for her beauty, sees the Greeks launch a thousand ships against the city of Troy, to which they will lay siege for ten whole years. It is a terrible war with casualties on all sides as well as strained relations between allies, whose consequences become tragedies.

In Troy you will find heroism and hatred, love and loss, revenge and regret, desire and despair. It is these human passions, written bloodily in the sands of a distant shore, that still speak to us today.

Troy is more than the battle for Helen. Which surprised me as the story shows the build-up and history of all the people involved with the battle.

Stephen Fry is on point with his performance reading Troy. He truly brings the story to life.

My knowledge of troy is very basic and due to my slight lack of interest in the area, it made it harder for me to get into this book over Mythos and heroes. Maybe as this story was more about the people, instead of god, demigods and monsters.

Overall I enjoyed Stephen Fry take on the very complicated timeline that links all the stories of Troy together.

My Rating for Troy is 4 out of 5.
