Book Review: Siren’s Song (Cassandra Palmer World) by Karen Chance

Hi Cara,

As I wait for Ignite the flames, I thought I would listen to Siren’s Song. This is a novella set in the Cassandra Palmer world, but this story follows John Pritkin. I consulted Karen Chance website and it advised reading Siren’s Song after Ride the Storm.

War mages are the magical equivalent of tanks: tough, powerful, and deadly. They have to be, in order to defend the supernatural community from the dangerous threats it sometimes faces. But what happens when the threat is them?

John Pritkin has been trying to recover from a demon curse that separated his body and soul and almost killed him. The reunification has left him with a flood of memories to process, some that he recalls from his past and some that he doesn’t, as well as wonky magic, fluctuating power levels, and a splitting headache. Something that only intensifies when he finds himself stuck in a city under siege—by his fellow war mages.

As the only one not overwhelmed by a massive enthrallment spell, John must find a way to free his fellow mages before they destroy themselves, and take a city of a million people along with them.

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

Siren’s Song is all about the War Mage John Pritkin. This time the trouble isn’t caused by Cassie.

There are moments when listening to Siren’s Song that I was confused. But by the end of the book, it all starts to make sense. As we are reading the book from John POV and everything isn’t clear to John so we are all in the same boat.

There is so much action in Siren’s Song from magic, physical and mental fights. It basically none stop action.

One of my favourite things is that Pritkin has a way about himself that causes anyone to meet him not to like him. It brings humour to the book when those people have to work with him.

Joyce Bean is the narrator and I enjoy her performance and the voices she gave all the characters.

My Rating for Siren’s Song is 4 out of 5.
