Book Review: A Desolation Called Peace (Teixcalaan #2) by Arkady Martine

Hi Cara,

Today on my blog I am reviewing the second book Arkady Martine Teixcalaan series. A Desolation called Peace is out now.

An alien armada lurks on the edges of Teixcalaanli space. No one can communicate with it, no one can destroy it, and Fleet Captain Nine Hibiscus is running out of options.

In a desperate attempt at diplomacy with the mysterious invaders, the fleet captain has sent for a diplomatic envoy. Now Mahit Dzmare and Three Seagrass—still reeling from the recent upheaval in the Empire—face the impossible task of trying to communicate with a hostile entity.

Whether they succeed or fail could change the fate of Teixcalaan forever.

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

A Desolation called Peace is beautifully written that expands the world and drama of the universe.

The story has so much going on, multi-layered is an understatement. In the first book, A Memory Called Empire the main POV is Mahit Dsmare. But in A Desolation Called Peace there is multiple POV, as the story is bigger and to see every aspect you need to see it from multiple views.

I did find it difficult to keep it all these POV in line. My mind had an issue with the name format and remember if it was the captain, heir, information spy etc.

On the name format, I did like that their not gendered so when I was reading I wasn’t assigning a gender to the character automatically.

The story is epic, it has drama, action, morality, secrets and a little romance.

My rating for A Desolation called Peace is 3.5 out of 5.

  1. I LOVED the first one. I am very excited for this – looking forward to the extra POVs but will definitely be prepared for the need to pay lose attention so I don’t get confused between them.
