Book Review: Nine by Zach Hines

Hi Cara,

The review on my blog today is Nine by Zach Hines. I loved the sound of the premise and it made me wonder what I would do with Nine lives. Nine is out in the UK 30th April 2020.

In an alternate world startlingly close to our own, humans have nine lives—and they can’t wait to burn straight through them.

As you shed lives, you shed your awkward phases: one death is equal to one physical and mental upgrade. Julian’s friends are obsessed with the idea of burning lives, but Julian is determined to stay on his first for as long as he can. His mother, the ultimate cautionary tale, burned through her first eight in just a few years, and Julian has no intention of succumbing to the debilitating rebirth sickness that she inflicted on herself.

But the regime has death incentives aimed at controlling overpopulation, and Julian realizes that he’s going to have to burn at some point—especially when he becomes a target for Nicholas, the manipulative leader of the Burners, the school’s suicide club. And when Julian eventually succumbs, he uncovers suspicious gaps in the rebirth system that may explain exactly why his mother went so far down the rabbit hole years ago. Along with a group of student dissenters, Julian sets out to find answers and is soon on the verge of exposing the greatest conspiracy ever unleashed on the world.

He has just eight more lives to uncover the brutal truth.

Nine brings a very different take on a world where resources are limited due to overpopulation.

One of my favourite aspects of the book is how society is structured around getting rid of your extra lives. Rewarding with more benefit for people with higher numbers. Even education, jobs and marriage are all dependant on having a higher life number.

The leading character of Nine is Julian, in the beginning, I wasn’t too keen on Julian as I find him selfish as he stands on not dying are causing issue with money for his family. But as the book continues I started to warming to him and the reason behind his decision to not waste his lives.

Nine builds in a way that gripped me with the conspiracy around the lakes. The twist kept me interested especially as we are seeing the story unfold from several different points of view.

The writing and storytelling are easy to read, I read the book in one night. As once you start you don’t really want to stop.

My favourite aspects of Nine;

  • The Nine lives
  • The issue with rebirths
  • find out the truth
  • The pacing of the story

My least favourite aspects of Nine;

  • The characters as it took me longer to warm to them.

My rating for Nine is 4 out of 5.
