A Torch Against the Night By Sabaa Tahir

A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir is the Sequel to An Ember in the Ashes. It pick up right were we left off from An Ember in Ashes with Elias and Laia as they try to escape from the Empire. Elias has promised Laia that he will help her break her brother out of the Empires worst prison. As Laia brother is the only person out of the Empire that can make swords that could be used against the Empires soldiers. There escape is made more difficult due to Elias mother the Commandant, and that the Emperor Marcus as set Elias best friends Helena the task of catching him for execution. Helena is the only person that would understand the way that Elias mind works and where he would go.

After finishing An Ember in the Ashes I had many ideas where I thought this story could go, but I was wrong there was so many twist turns, and revelation that kept me surprised and hooked for whole book. It left me content in the fact that we got some answers, and certain things were resolved, but left me wanting to know what happens next.

I still have my hatred for Commandant which has grown with this book, I really interested in her motives and why she hates Elias as much as she does.

Slight spoiler  alert **Elias is close to death ** Which I found really hard to read, the character has the same name as my Great granddad who I loved so much. Does anyone else have this problem when reading a book. That the character name connects to someone you love meaning you get more emotional connected.

Eleventh Grave in Moonlight by Darynda Jones

Eleventh Grave in Moonlight is book 11 in the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. It follows Charley Davidson a P.I that happens to also be the Grimm Reaper and married to the son of Satan Reyes Farrows.

This book follows straight on from The Curse of the Tenth Grave where Charley has told the Archangel Micheal that she will take over the world. Charley ends up taken a case that brings her back to the Foster the couple that kidnapped Reyes from his parents and gave him away to a monster of a man. While Charley is working the case she is learning more about her godly self and what is wrong with Uncle Bob and Amber. I enjoyed and appreciated the fact that certain lose ends from other books were tired up in this book, or gone into more detail.

I LOVE this book series, I want Charley to be my best friend. I really enjoy that even though she has been through a lot she is happy. Her random thought process and conversation and how everyone in her life go with it, her naming of furinture. The slogan t-shirts I need I like it when my psychiatrist plays with my marbles shirt it my life.

They way the book ended took me by surpise and now I have to deal with the wait till the next book wondering what will happen next. I thought I could take my mind off the wait by naming my furniture, I’m thinking about naming by bed Rapheal and my reading chair Dean. What do you think?

I give this book 5 out of 5

Archangel’s Heart by Nalini Singh

Archangel’s Heart is book nine in the Guild Hunter series, that follows the lives of Elena her love the Archangel of New York Raphael and his personal guide the Seven.

The world that Nalini Singh has created is an amazing world, where the world has been divided into 10 each part is ruled be an Archangel. The Archangels rules over angels and Vampires. Nalini Singh has put an interesting spin on the vampire, as these mortal were turned to Vampires by the blood of the angels. This Vampire can go into the light, churches and garlic has no effect.

Elena is a born hunter she has the ability that allow her to track and capture Vampires than run from the Angels and harm humans. Elena is also the only mortal to be made into an Angel.

This story follows on two years later from book 6 Archangel’s Legion after the war with Lijuan the Archangel of China as she tried to take over the world. It been two years since Lijuan has disappeared and China is starting to fall in to Chaos without Archangel interference. Due to this a group called the Luminata (which is like Angel Monks) call all the Archangels to them to decide the fate of China. When Elena and Raphael get their they come to realise that there more going on in the Luminata then just enlightment.

I always love this series, the stories are alway interesting but what I enjoy more is the character. The character are so rich, interesting and not prefect. They all have there demons that they must deal with but it doesnt stop them, doing what is right or being their for the people they care about.

Aodhan is part of Rapheal Seven and has been assigned to guard Elena at the Luminata. Aodhan has a tragic past and his is slowly puting the piece back togother. We see the biggest growth in Aodhan in this book and I was glad to see, I hope that he will get his own story like other member of the Seven have.

Elena and Rapheal are one of my favorite book couples. I love their banter and the fact they don’t have to agree on everything, but they will always be their for each other.

Book like this make me wish that we did have Angels living among us, just so I could ask the loads of history questions. If I could ask someone that been alive for over a thousand years a question it would be; Was Shakespeare truely Shakespeare and not Franis Bacon using a pen name?  What would you ask?

I give this book 5 out of 5.

An Ember in the Ashes By Sabaa Tahir

An Ember in the Ashes is the stories of Laia and Elias, each alternative chapter tell the story from their point of view.

Laia has lost her family to the Empire, to help free her brother she makes a deal with a rebel. They ask her to spy on the ruthless Commandant of Blackcliff, the Empires greatest military academy in exchange for them to break her brother out of prison. This is the most dangerous thing Laia has ever done, as if caught her life will be at stake.

Elias is a solider at Blackcliff, the top of his class one of their finest soldiers who whats free of the tyranny and the Empire. As Elias is planning to desert after he graduate , but his destiny has other plans and him and Laia which will change the face of the Empire.

It took me a couple of chapter to get into the story, I enjoyed that it was an alternative chapter but it did take me a little longer to connect with the characters. Once I was into the story I couldn’t put the book down, to the sacrifice of my sleep.

It made me question myself If I was part of the Empire;

  •  How would I treat Slaves?
  • Would I accept Rape as a normal act?
  • Would I conform to the will of the Empire?
  • Would I find it an honor to be a Mask?

If I wasnt a part of the Empire;

  • Would I join the Rebels?
  • What would I do for freedom?
  • How would I cope if I was a Slave?

It makes me glad that I don’t have to make those choices that Laia and Elias have to make, that I can read the story and go back to my safe little world.

I give this book 4 out of 5

The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah. J. Mass

The Assassin’s Blade is the prequel to The Thorne of Glass series, it was nice to read about Celaena before Endovier,  and how that change her. For anyone reading the Thorne of Glass series this prequal is a must read.

The book is split into 5 separate stories that follow on the 6 months or so before Celaena was caught and sent to Endovier. The stories are all stories that Celaena has mention in the main stories but not gone into detail.

The first story is the Assassin and the Pirate Lord, this story is about how Celaena freed 200 slaves.

The second story is the Assassin and the Healer, on the way to the silent Assassin Celaena helps save a young healers life.

The third story is the Assassin and the dessert, this story is about the Slient Assassin and stealing the Asterion horse.

The fourth story is The Assassin and the underworld, this story is about Celaena her last job as Arobynn Hammel.

The firth story is The Assassin and the Empire is about the death of Sam and Celaena being arrested.

I love that though the stories you got to see the evolution of Sam and Celaena relationship and how it confuse Celaena.I wish that Sam didn’t have to die as he as good for Celaena but I understand why for the story it just sucks.

Oh and the main thing that I got from the stories is how much I hate Arobynn Hammel, and his manipulation, the book show just how mainpulative he was and his aim to control Celaena.

Cruel Crown by Victoria Aveyard

Cruel Crown is two prequels in the Red Queen series. The first story follows Queen Coriane Cals mother, the second is about Farley and expanding the Scarlet Guard into Norta.

Reading about how Coriane broke my heart a little, to see the similarities between Cal and Coriane and how that was taken away from Cal. Also I would love to know more about Cal’s Grandparents as the relationship between the King, Queen and the Kings true love. Also the story made me hate Elara more and makes me wonder what else she could have done before the start of Red Queen.

The second story about Farley didn’t really interest me until Shade Burrows was introduced as it explains how he ends up joining. I enjoyed reading the banter between Shade and Farley, it explains her reactions with Shade more in Glass Sword.

I am glad I read the stories as it gives more background to the stories and I better understanding of the world. I liked the fact that gender doesn’t matter in this world that I women can just be as good at war tactics as a man can be at place setting and decorations.

Now I am need to find something to read that will keep me distracted till Kings Cage come out.

Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

Once I had finished Red Queen I had to start reading Glass Sword straight away. The book pick up as Red Queen ended with the escape of Mare and Cal from their attempted execution at the hand of Maven.

The book follows as Mare as she tries to recruit and save ‘Newbloods’ like herself, and see if they will fight with them to take down Maven. Mare is struggling with what she must do and what she has done to stay alive. She is pulling away from everyone as she does not know who she can trust. She wants to trust Cal but she knows that he could leave at anytime as The Scarlet Guard isn’t his fight and he is only their because he wants Maven dead. This book introduces us to many different ‘Newbloods’ and their gift, which shows how different they are to the Slivers. I would want a “Newblood” gift over the Slivers as they are much more interesting, but I don’t want the whole running for my life from a mad King.

I enjoyed this book a lot, when I thought I could trust what was going with the story and characters, something would change and I would have to rethink what was happening. The author is very good at given you hope and taken it away leaving you wanting more.

This book got me thinking about how I would cope if I was in Mare situation. I would wish that I would be strong and not push people away, but I think I would do the same. I would want to be strong enough to not let Maven get to me and focus on Cal, but emotions are a tricky thing.

Now I just have to wait 29 days till Kings Cage is released so I can find out the fate of Mare, Cal and the Scarlet Guard. At least I have Cruel Crown to feed my addiction to this world to keep me going untill then.
