Book Review: Crownbreaker (Spellsinger #6) by Sebastien De Castell

Hi Cara,

The Spellsinger series has come to an end. Crownbreaker is the sixth and final book by Sebastien De Castell. Below are the other books in the series.

  1. Spellsinger
  2. Shadowblack
  3. Charmcaster
  4. Soulbinder
  5. Queenslayer

Kellen and Reichis are settling into their new lives as protectors of the young queen and dealing with the constantly shifting threats to her reign and to her life. For the first time in his life, Kellen feels as if he’s becoming the kind of man that his mentor Ferius had wanted him to be. Even Reichis has come to appreciate having a noble purpose – so long as no one minds him committing the occasional act of theft from the royal treasury.

But what seems to be a simple card game between Kellen and an old man is soon revealed to be a deadly game of wits in which a powerful mage has trapped the queen’s spellslinger in order to kill him.

Crownbreaker brings Kellen current path of Endless Stars to an end.

Everything that Kellen has seen has been put through in the other 5 books can be seen in Crownbreaker. Every moment has been built to the situation Kellen finds himself in as he faces a God. Kellen sees the world differently and I like that about Kellen, as in difficult situation (Which he finds himself in a lot.) the way he thinks of a way out is always riveting and keeps me engaged

Crownbreaker brings together character from every book as Kellen battles to save the country from a religious war. It was nice seeing those characters again. Especially as Kellen doesn’t think he’s popular or well-liked. But he has impacted a lot of peoples lives.

Again I still do not like Kellen biological family and this book didn’t change that opinion. There were moments that gave some of the family redeeming moments. But in the end, I wouldn’t want to be apart of the family.

Reiches is still my favourite character I love that he has fully embraced the pampering lifestyle with biscuits, booze and baths.

I love this series for it quotable moments below are some of my favourites.

“You know who looks dumb in a hat? You look dumb in a hat. Gonna poop in your hat, that’s what I’m gonna do. Not that you’ll notice.”

“Nothing good has ever come fo the question. ‘When’s the last time you got beat up good and proper?’

“With the invaluable assistance of a certain devilishly handsome squirrel cat.”

“Yeah, well today I’m the Path of I do not give a crap.”

When a series comes to an end I worry that the ending won’t match my hope for the characters but I am happy with Kellen ending. I will miss reading Kellen and Reiches adventures.

My rating for Crownbreaker is 5 out of 5.
