Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody was the book I received in my Fairyloot book. (My unboxing will come later) The book is comes out in the UK in paperback 7th September, it is already out in Hardback with certain sellers.
The book follows Sorina a 16-year-old girl who lives within the borders of the Gomorrah Festival. Gomorrah is a traveling circus city with many unusual members, but Sorina is unique she is the only illusion-worker born in hundreds of years. This rare talent allows her to create illusions that people can see, feel and touch, all with personalities of their own. Her illusions are her family, and together they are the case of the Gomorrah Freak Show. Sorina has always believed that no matter how real her family is they are just a figment of her imagination, or that is was she believed one of them is murdered. Now the only way she can protect her family is to find out who is doing this and how. On this investigation Sorina will find out more about the Festival, political turmoil and forbidden romance, but the truth might be more horrifying than Sorina would have ever expected.
Sorina as I character is really interesting, she was born with out eyes she doesn’t even have eye sockets. She hide behind a mask as even in the Festival she is more of a ‘Freak’ than other. She has no biological family and has created her own, the family she have created to me seem like they have qualities that she wishes for herself. Although some of the qualities she does have she just never believed in herself.
I was fascinated with the concept of a moving city, that even when they are moving the city is still working, that things still go on like normal.
This book merged two of my favourite genre, fantasy and crime fiction. What moves the plot of the story is the murder of Sorina family and it kept me gripped, I was torn between trusting and not trusting character. I spent a good portion of the book hoping one of the characters wasn’t a bad guy.
If you liked Caraval by Stephanie Garber I would recommend this book. I will be looking out for more of Amanda Foody books in the future.
I give this book 4.4 out of 5.
