Forest of a Thousand Lanterns was the book I received in my October FairyLoots Villainous box.
Forest of a Thousand Lanterns is the retelling of the East Asian fantasy The Evil Queen,. Xifeng is a beautiful eighteen year old peasant girl who a been told her whole life, by her Evil Witch aunt Guma that she is destined to be the empresses. Xifeng is despite to leave her forgotten village in the middle of know where for the chance to full fill her destiny. To full fill her destiny Xifeng will have to make sacrifice along the way. Now Xifeng will have to decide if she is willing to sacrifice the love of the only boy to every love her. To embrace the darkness in her for more power, and what is she willing to do to gain more power to help her get to the throne.
I was drawn to Xifeng for different reason than normal, normally I would become emotional attached to the main character and I didn’t with Xifeng. Although I was intrigued with her as a character and her drive to become the Empress. I think the author did a great job of creating a complex character that balances between the light and the dark.
The story is intertwined with drama, romance, good, evil and danger. A story of the secret power of woman and want they will do to get and keep it. I great pick for a villainous box
This book is great for fans of Heartless, Maleficent and Flame in the Mist etc.
