Hello Drút,
Todays review is about the newly realised science fiction epic A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine.
The Teixcalaanli Empire has summoned a new Ambassador for the small independent mining station Lsel, without telling them what has happened to the previous ambassador. Until Ambassador Mahit Dzmare arrives to find that he has died, the Empire says it was an accident but the fact don’t add up and that it might have been murder.
Mahit must discover the truth behind the murder, save her Station from being conquered by the empire. All while navigating an alien culture, hiding a secret technology, and hoping she doesn’t end up like her predecessor.
A Memory called Empire is a smart, political Science fiction Odyssey.
It’s a murder mystery, wrapped in a political plot. The plot is smart and well constructed. The reader is in the same boat as the lead character Mahit Dzmare, trying to navigate a new world. I like Mahit straight away, she is smarter than she looks, hard-working and very determined.
The world that Arkady has created is gloriously detailed, a world where poetry is key to every aspect of Teixcalaanli life. The language of Texicalaanli reminds me of Shakespeare, with its language pattern and more than one meanings.
A Memory Called Empire is a monumental debut novel and I can’t wait to see what happens next in Teixcalaanli.
Any one that loves science fiction with a political twist should pick up A Memory Called Empire.
My rating for A Memory Called Empire is 4.8 out of 5.
