Book Review: An Illusion of Thieves (Chimera #1) by Cate Glass

Hi Kanca,

Today’s review is An Illusion of Thieves by Cate Glass. I got my hands on a copy at the MCM Blogger brunch in May.

As a child, Romy escaped her hard upbringing when she was trained to be a courtesan.

Her life is better than expected when she is chosen to be the courtesan to the Shadow Lord. The Shadow Lord is a revolutionary noble who strives to bring law, order and comfort once reserved for the rich to all.

When her family is caught thieving with the aid of magic, Romy influence is the only thing that can spare their lives. The price of her influences is Romy banishment.

Banished to  Beggar’s Ring, Romy has just her wits and her own long-hidden sorcery to help her and Neri survive. But when a plot to overthrow the Shadow Lord and incite civil war is uncovered, only Romy knows how to stop it. To do so, she’ll have to rely on newfound allies—a swordmaster, a silversmith, and her own thieving brother. And they’ll need the very thing that could condemn them all: magic.

An Illusion of Thieves is a book that shows the strength of a woman who has had to start her life from scratch.

The leading lady of An Illusion of Thieves is Romy. I really respect her very much. Romy was sold as a child, then mocked by her family for her profession. She shows an Amazing internal strength. This is shown in how she rebuilds her life and still does the right thing. While dealing with her own demons.

Magic is an important element of An Illusion of Thieves, the magic system is fascinating. It reminds me of the X-men powers that the person magic is very different. That with practice they can evolve.  It will be interesting to see the magic evolution in the next books.

I felt that An Illusion of Thieves is a more character driven story than plot driven. There are several action scenes in the book, but the book is all about Romy life.

As the end of An Illusion of Thieves came to an end, I thought everything had wrapped up but the author Cate dropped a not so little nugget at the end which make me want book 2 now.

My rating for An Illusion of Thieves is 4 out of 5.
