Hi Habib,
Todays review is Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. The description and cover are what draw me to this book.
Elizabeth has grown up being told that all sorcerers are evil.
She was raised in one of the Great Libraries. Surrounded by the magic books of sorcery – grimoires that rattle beneath iron chains and whisper about magic. These grimoires are locked away as if provoked they can transform into monster of ink and leather, bent of death and destruction. The purpose of the Great Libraries is to protect the world from this danger, the front line are the Warden which Elizabeth hopes to be.
One night an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elizabeth stops it before it escapes the Great Library. In doing so she becomes implicate her in the crime. To be trialled for her alleged crimes she is torn from her home and taken to the capital. The only person she can turn to for help is the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant.
What seems like one case of sabotage ends up being a centuries old conspiracy that Elizabeth gets herself tangled up in. A conspiracy that not only would cause the Great Libraries to go up in flame, but the world along with it.
Elizabeth alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught, about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself.
For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.
Sorcery of Thorns is a captivating fantasy read.
One of my favourite elements of Sorcery of Thorns is the way magic works in this world. It’s fascinating the connection between demon and the sorcerer, the selling of the life force. The mark that the sorcery wears to show the deal. I would love to find out who it all started.
Both Elizabeth and Nathaniel are interesting, funny, smart and determined characters, I liked them both straight away. Even though Nathaniel is a sorcerer and they don’t have the best reputation. Another one of my favourite element of the book is the interaction between Elizabeth, Nathaniel and Silas Nathaniel Demon.
The conspiracy that Elizabeth gets herself wrapped in, makes for an engrossing story. The way in which Margaret has built the story means we get an interesting case with fun romance.
I am hoping that this isn’t the last time I get to read about Elizabeth and Nathaniel, I am completely and utterly invested in them. I would take any form of a story.
Finally please can someone create fan art of Elizabeth and Nathaniel hugging Silas.
My rating for Sorcery of Thorns is 5 out of 5.
