Book Review: The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman

Hi Cara,

As we get closer to Halloween, I thought It would be a good time to read something creepier. That’s why I picked up and read The Remaking by Clay Mcleod Chapman.

In the woods surrounding Pilot’s Creek Virginia Ella Louise has lived there for the last decade raising her daughter Jessica.

After being shunned by their upper-crust family and the residents of Pilot’s Creek as they do not fit the social norm. But when the townspeople become desperate for help they turn to her apothecary to cure them. Until Ella Louise is blamed for the death of a prominent customer. Accused of witchcraft, both mother and daughter are burned at the stake in the middle of the night. Ella Louise’s burial site is never found, but the little girl has the most famous grave in the South. A steel-reinforced coffin surrounded by a fence of interconnected white crosses.

But what happens when someone tries to tell Ella Lousie and Jessica story.

The Remaking mixes urban legend with crime fiction. That makes you question if someone alive is the guilty party or not.

The book is split into four different periods of time;

  • 1951- Being told about Ella Louise / Jessica Life and Death story
  • 1971 – Don’t tread on Jessica grave The making of the film
  • 1995 – I know what you did on Jessica Grace – The Making of the remake.
  • 2016 – Podcast Journalist looking into the original story and the events surrounding the film.
    I enjoyed reading the story through the lens of different time periods. Espeically seeing the evoluation of film and media.

The lynch pin in the story is Amber Pendleton. Amber life story is interwined with Ella Louise and Jessica Ford death. I felt sorry for Amber as she pushed into a life she never wanted and has to live with the conseqences of a pushy mother.

If you want to find out more about the Little Witch Girl legend, here is a link to the story I found.

The Remaking is perfect for anyone that doesnt like frightening horror but want to be creepyed out.

My rating for The Remaking is 4 out of 5
