Hi Cara,
Today review is regarding Tochi Onyebuchi book War Girls.
The year is 2172. Climate change and nuclear disasters have rendered much of earth unlivable. Only the lucky ones have escaped to space colonies in the sky.
In a war-torn Nigeria, battles are fought using flying, deadly mechs and soldiers are outfitted with bionic limbs and artificial organs meant to protect them from the harsh, radiation-heavy climate. Across the nation, as the years-long civil war wages on, survival becomes the only way of life.
Two sisters, Onyii and Ify, dream of more. Their lives have been marked by violence and political unrest. Still, they dream of peace, of hope, of a future together.
And they’re willing to fight an entire war to get there.
War Girls is an action-packed book that shows the devastation of war and humankind on each other.
The technology in War Girls blow my mind, think Black Panter but add another level. The way that people bodies are enhanced with technology, that everything can be replaced with a tech equivalent. It scary what parts can be turned off or on.
I feel sorry for Onyii and Ify both dragged into a war that no child should be apart of. I think what got to me is even though this story is based in a future world. We have child soldiers in our past and present.
The story is told in Onyii and Ify point of view mainly. Seeing the war of the Biafran and Nigerian side. By seeing both sides it helped me get a better picture of the situation. It makes you question which side is in the right. My opinion is neither, the greed of man feed the flames of hate.
I enjoyed the fact that the most dangerous solider, Onyii is female, that she can best any man in a fight. I liked the fact that its mainly Onyii protectiveness of others that kept her fighting. Although some of it is fuelled with revenge.
War Girls takes its time building the world and the characters. This slowed the plot down in parts. But the world is so vivid you won’t really notice it. With War Girls being so vivid, full of details and action I could easily see it up on the big screen.
The way that War Girls ends make me interested to see what happens next. It is perfect for anyone that enjoys Sci-Fi dystopia with strong and smart female leads.
My rating for War Girls is 4 out of 5.
