Hi Cara,
One of my favourite books of 2019 was Lord of Secrets by Breanna Teintze. I was lucky enough to win a copy of the second book Lady of Shadow via Jo Flecther Twitter account. Lady of Shadows is out 16th April 2020.
Death is simple. Dreams are dangerous. Life is . . . unexpected.
Outlaw wizard Corcoran Gray expected death to be final, but life, and his loved ones, had other plans. A year after being resurrected and flung into a new body, he’s still trying to come to terms with his situation – and his self – when the all-powerful Mages’ Guild demands his help to stop a deadly plague.
He’s inclined to refuse the organisation that still wants him dead, until his partner Brix starts showing symptoms – to save her, Gray will do anything, even if it means working with his greatest enemies.
But it quickly becomes clear that this is no normal plague. The situation is more complicated and more lethal than anyone has realised. Ancient dangers are stirring, and thousands of lives are at stake . . .

Lady of Shadows is a funny, action-packed magic mystery story that I didn’t want to put down.
A year has passed since Corcoran Gray battle with the false God Jaren. He has managed to stay out of trouble but trouble has finally caught up with him. In the current times, a magical plague effects wizards and non-wizards seems very well timed as I write this review in self-isolation. I also like the fact that one of the first symptoms is a cough.
The mystery that Corcoran has been pulled into is interesting, I like the fact that when investigation the plague we get to find out more about Brix and her people the Tirnaal.
Corcoran Gray is still a great character, I love his sarcastic and self-deprecating manner, mix with his intelligence and someone who wants to do the right thing. A lot of the time he makes me really laugh. Gray is a lot smarter than the other wizards, so it fun watching him figure things out of advise Dace a Guild Wizard on how to improve his circle.
While on the topic of Dace, I liked his introduction into the series. He is a Guild Wizard but actually a good one. The back and forth between Dace and Gray made me not want to put the book down, encase I missed anything between these two.
Breanna writing style is fun, easy to read and engaging. Even though it been nearly a year since I read Lord of Secrets, when I picked up Lady of Shadows it felt like no time has passed. It was so easy to go back into Gray’s world.
My Favourite aspects of Lady of Shadows;
- The Humour
- Gray and Brix relationship
- The Plague mystery
- Gray and Dace banter
- Magic and its Side effects
- Interesting and fast-paced story.
My Rating for Lady of Shadow is 5 out of 5.
