Book Review: Rivers of London (Rivers of London #1) by Ben Aaronvitch

Hi Cara,

My favourite genres are fantasy and crime and this is why Rivers of London series has been on my radar for a while. So I am glad to finally got round to reading it.

My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (and as the Filth to everybody else).

My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit – we do paperwork so real coppers don’t have to – and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluable, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England.

Now I’m a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden … and there’s something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair.

The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it’s falling to me to bring order out of chaos – or die trying.

Rivers of London has a great mix of magic, science, mystery and crime.

Ben has created a great balance of magic and science with the believes and sceptics of magic. It’s perfectly shown in Paul and Leslie friendship. I liked that Paul accepts Ghosts and magic.  Where Leslie more sceptical but will go along with Paul till she sees the evidence herself.

PC Paul Grant is the leading man in Rivers of London. One of my favourite aspects of Pauls personality is how inquisitive he is. He is always looking for answers and figuring out why things (magic) works the way it does.

The plot revolves around murder and it’s magical connection. I enjoyed how the case unravels.  How the evidence (Magical and standard) builds with all the pieces falling into place.

Another aspect I enjoyed was how magic ran side by side with the normal London. That if you weren’t in the loop you would never have guessed. I especially enjoyed the side plot regarding the territorial dispute between Mother and Father Thames.

Overall Rivers of London is entertaining, fast-paced with a great mystery. I am looking forward to seeing what case Paul finds himself on. And finding out more about the mysterious DCI Nightengale.

My Rating for Rivers of London is 4.5 out of 5.
