Harrow The Ninth (The Locked Tomb #2) by Tamsyn Muir

Hi Cara,

Today’s review takes me back to the world of the locked tomb. Harrow the Ninth is the second book in Tamsyn Muir series. The first book in the series was Gideon the Ninth.

She answered the Emperor’s call.

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.

In victory, her world has turned to ash.

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the Emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman’s shoulders.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her Emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath — but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.

Sealed in the gothic gloom of the Emperor’s Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

(Synopsis from Goodreads.com)

Harrow the Ninth is a beautifully written story but I spent most of my time reading very confused.

The story changes from past to present, first and second perspective. This gave the story an interesting pace as you know something is building, but that is the only thing you know.

Harrow the leading lady in sharp contrast to Gideon. Gideon has humour and warmth where Harrow is faith and knowledge. She is a jarring character, but there is something about her that draws me to her. It makes me want to befriend her.

An element that I enjoyed was finding out more about the creation of the nine houses, God and the Lyctors. God himself is an interesting character, a man with so much power that trys to come across human.

By the end part of Harrow the Ninth, things started to make sense but I was still left with a lot if question it will be interesting to read Alecto the Ninth.

My Rating for Harrow the Ninth is 3.8 out of 5.
