Book Review: The Order of the Pure Moon reflected in Water by Zen Cho

Hi Cara,

Today on my blog I am reviewing Zen Cho short story The Order of the Pure Moon reflected in water.

Zen Cho returns with a found family wuxia fantasy that combines the vibrancy of old school martial arts movies with characters drawn from the margins of history.

A bandit walks into a coffeehouse, and it all goes downhill from there. Guet Imm, a young votary of the Order of the Pure Moon, joins up with an eclectic group of thieves (whether they like it or not) in order to protect a sacred object, and finds herself in a far more complicated situation than she could have ever imagined.

(synopsis from Goodreads.com)

A line in the synopsis reminds me of an opening of a joke.

“A bandit walks into a coffeehouse, and it all goes downhill from there.”

This line is one of the reasons I picked this book up.

The Order of the Pure Moon reflected in Water packs in a lot within its 176 pages. Aspects of the book’s character surprised me, especially regarding gender and staying to one’s vow. (I think the way it which they purified themselves is very fitting is anyone forces them to break there vow.)

The plot follows a group of bandits on a journey to sell on an item. The addition of a nun to the group cause problems but also solves issues. Guet Imm is a great catalyst for this charming story.

My rating for The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in water is 3.5 out of 5.
